It's no secret that killing off certain characters is standard practice for almost all popular TV shows. After all, it adds more drama and makes the audience experience more emotions, whether the character is hated or is a fan favorite.

However, there are some character deaths that no one saw coming, and this Virgin River character's passing is exactly like that.

The romantic drama is known for its depiction of many complicated relationships within families as well as romantic couples. However, the showrunners also like to cover heavier topics like death, and the person they decided to take out last season was Calvin.

Calvin, who's portrayed by David Cubitt, is a local gang leader who runs a drug operation and is a villain in most Virgin River seasons. From authorizing Spencer's death to deliberately poisoning food at Jack's bar to ruin Jack's reputation, Calvin has a long track record in being evil, without a doubt.

Virgin River Fans May Have Already Written a Better S5 Plot Than the Writers

As law enforcement was onto Calvin, the kingpin kept a low profile in the last two seasons. Throughout season 4, we follow Brie and detective Mike who are on the hunt to track down the criminal boss but struggle to find him. Finally, as part of a bargaining deal with an inmate, they locate him on a secluded lake. When they arrive, Mike calls for backup, but Calvin sees the flashlights in the forest and gets spooked. Next thing we know, the boat explodes, which presumably ends in his death.

His death, however, was so unexpected that it sparked many theories amongst fans about what actually went down, as many are convinced he didn't actually die, and the fact that Brie mentions they never found his body also raises some questions.

Some think he managed to get off the boat just before it exploded and is still alive as he seems to disappear down the side of the boat. Others theorize that not only did he fake his death, but he's also working with law enforcement to bring down the new shady antagonist, Melissa Montgomery.

The One Line So Overused on Virgin River, It's Become Laughable

The strange thing is, Melissa also implied to Brady that she was behind Calvin's death and used this as a threat to warn him about the fate that would await him if he didn't cooperate. But what we don't know is whether she's just bluffing to scare Brady or she did, in fact, get rid of Calvin.
