Independent production, young cast, and a familiar eerie touch.

Being fascinated by how horror keeps reinventing itself, I couldn’t pass up the news of Osgood Perkins’ next project. His new film, The Young People, is heading into production this October in Canada.

It’s set in a middle school, where a girl named Sue befriends the new student, Kitty. All seems idyllic until Kitty’s behaviour begins to twist into something troubling.

A Horror Without Neon

This will be Perkins’ first film in years without Neon, the distributor behind Longlegs and The Monkey. The Young People is an independent production with no big names expected — especially for the young leads. A stripped-back approach that leans on mood rather than marketing. Isn’t that when horror often feels at its purest?

A Relentless Pace

Perkins is everywhere right now. With The Monkey and Keeper both out this year and The Young People soon filming, he’s keeping a remarkable pace. After the breakout success of Longlegs ($10M budget, $127M gross), this output feels less like risk and more like momentum.

School Corridors, Uneasy Shadows

A middle school setting is a clever twist for horror. Childhood bonds and small betrayals already carry tension — with Perkins’ touch, the atmosphere promises to be quietly unsettling. Think classrooms after hours, whispered secrets, and the dread of realising your friend isn’t who you thought.
