R.J. Decker season 2 finale explained: seven episodes build to one cliffhanger — and ABC still hasn't ordered season 3
R.J. Decker's second season ran barely six weeks and saved its biggest swing for the final shot. Its own cast is now publicly asking ABC for the episodes to resolve it.
ABC aired the R.J. Decker season 2 finale, "Before You Accuse Me," on October 27, 2026, closing a seven-episode run that started on September 15. The case of the week reopens a cop killing that the Fort Lauderdale police considered closed for a decade, and the answer isn't where the department looked. Then the last scene changes the subject entirely.
ABC hasn't decided whether there will be a season 3. Bevin Bru, who plays Detective Mel Abreu, told TVLine the ending gave her goosebumps when she first read the script.
The case: who killed Bobby Werner
Emi Ochoa (Jaina Lee Ortiz) hires R.J. (Scott Speedman) to reopen the murder of Officer Bobby Werner. Gabriel Romero has served 10 years of a life sentence for it, on a confession he gave after 32 hours of questioning while going through withdrawal, per Comic Basics.
That puts R.J. on a collision course with Mel. She was Bobby's friend, she was on the phone with him when he was shot, and she's determined to prove the police got it right. The investigation runs through Bobby's former partner Flynn, who had an unreported drop gun and was off the force within months of the murder, before scientist Trudy (Shantel VanSanten) runs the prints and takes the answer to Mel instead of R.J.
The killer is Jessica, Bobby's widow. She's a serial scammer who may have killed her husband for his life insurance. Mel apologizes, Gabriel gets an expedited hearing and a real shot at release, and CPS removes Jessica's daughter Danielle from her custody and places her with Bobby's parents.
The cliffhanger
Losing her daughter is what sets Jessica off. She calls Mel, per TVLine, and says she doesn't know who she is without Danielle. Then she asks Mel who she'll be without her own family.
The final shot shows Jessica outside Mel's house, watching her wife Catherine (Adelaide Clemens) and their daughter Sofia (Mélodie Rose Romano). R.J. and Mel are miles away at a trailer park, and the episode ends there.

The threat hits both leads at once. Catherine is Mel's wife, and she's also R.J.'s ex-wife.
"And now we need a Season 3, because what's going to happen?"
— Bevin Bru, to TVLine
Bru already has a rescue plan. She told TVLine she pitched showrunner Rob Doherty a version where Mel keeps Jessica talking on the phone while SWAT moves into the house. Doherty vetoed the part where the elderly neighbor, Estelle, plays decoy.
R.J., Emi and Trudy
The romantic side of the season is just as unresolved. R.J. and Emi grew closer through season 2 until the murder of her father, corrupt state senator Victor Ochoa, derailed things. Trudy has since emerged as a real connection of his own, and the finale gives him no answer between the two.

Mel says she'll back whoever R.J. picks. Bru herself is openly on Team Emi and told TVLine she wants more Emi and Mel scenes in season 3.
Why ABC is taking its time
The numbers explain the wait:
- Season 1: Nine episodes, March 3 to April 28, 2026. The premiere reached 11.64 million multiplatform viewers in six days, per Wikipedia's ratings data.
- The renewal: ABC picked up season 2 on May 8, along with its entire scripted slate.
- Season 2: Seven episodes, September 15 to October 27. The premiere drew about 9.61 million multiplatform viewers over seven days, per Comic Basics.
That's roughly 17% fewer people for the premiere, with an extra day to count them. Bru points to the show staying in the Hulu and Disney+ Top 10, which matters more every year for a broadcast drama.
In May, R.J. Decker got renewed in a package deal with every other ABC drama. This time it has to make its case on its own, with a smaller audience and a cliffhanger that only works if ABC pays for the answer.
Jessica asked Mel who she'll be without her family. ABC hasn't decided whether Mel gets to find out.
