A new retcon that came out of nowhere turned the character's struggles into a terrible joke.

Releasing Black Widow's first (and seemingly only) long-overdue solo film after the character's tragic death in Avengers: Endgame seemed like a questionable decision from the get-go.

And when the film was finally released, fans' concerns were validated, as it felt rather unnecessary and didn't bring any extremely important details about Natasha Romanoff that desperately needed to be told, making Scarlett Johansson 's final appearance in the MCU rather bland.

However, the latest Marvel TV series, Secret Invasion, managed to further undermine the importance of Black Widow's struggles to destroy Dreykov, the head of the Red Room program that trained Black Widows, turning it into a total insult to the character.

Episode 2 ended with viewers being introduced to Nick Fury's Skrull wife, Varra (or Priscilla), while episode 3 revealed some interesting details about her work with the ex-director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

In a flashback sequence, we see Varra hand Nick a document that will "put Dreykov's men on their heels," directly implying that it was Skrull agents who weakened the organization.

This makes all of Natasha's successes in taking him down a terrible joke, as this retcon simply has her taking advantage of the opportunity given to her by the actions of completely unrelated forces.

The Budapest mission, which has been referenced several times in the MCU films as one of her and Clint Barton's greatest successes, has just lost most of its meaning, with the Skrulls apparently doing the hard work.

Furthermore, the events of her solo movie, which were a direct result of the mission, now mean almost nothing. Now it's not entirely her fault that Dreykov's innocent daughter, Antonia, was badly damaged in an explosion meant to kill her father, leading to the girl's transformation into Taskmaster, and ultimately killing the drama of Natasha's inner struggles.

Episode 4 of Secret Invasion will be released on July 12, 2023.
