Squid Game Actor Says He’s Glad the Show Killed Fan-Favorite Character Off
He might have stolen the entire show, but still deserved it.
Squid Game ’s second season provoked a new wave of shock among the series’ fans, introducing a bunch of new compelling characters and even more gruesome ways for them to die while competing for a big prize.
Among all of them, Thanos, portrayed by k-pop star Choi Seung-hyun, was probably the one to entertain the viewers the most, with them hesitating if they should love him or hate him or just both.
The character’s random death was a plot twist Thanos’ lovers and haters didn’t even want to see coming, but the actor himself felt differently about the season’s most controversial figure.
Choi Seung-hyun Felt Relieved When Learnt about Thanos’ Death
Despite the character definitely being the entire second season’s highlight, many were still surprised he didn’t die sooner; Seung-hyun, on the contrary, felt like it was all just on time.
In an interview with Tudum, the actor revealed that he had adapted a different attitude towards the character while portraying him as “Thanos is someone who is under the influence of drugs. He's a dangerous character. So when I first read how he dies in the script, I honestly thought that it was about time. I thought his death was quite timely, and I also thought he deserved to die”.
Seung-hyun also stated that he had been more than satisfied with the production team’s work since Thanos’ death at a very random moment in the bathroom slaughter had more impact than any other plot twist could’ve offered.
Choi Seung-hyun Has Become a Meme Thanks to Thanos’ Role
Despite the character’s sometimes quite irritating attitude, the actor’s charisma still did its trick, and Choi Seung-hyun has got some portion of international love and support.
During the interview, the actor shared that his friends and colleagues keep sending him Thanos-related memes more than a month after the season’s premiere on Netflix, and sometimes “director Hwang [Dong-hyuk] sends me Thanos memes, too”.
Talking about his own way of seeing the character, Seung-hyun once again reminded that Thanos is a pure villain who shouldn’t be romanticised, also stating that he “tried to create a contrast between who he is –– before he's under [the influence of] drugs, and after. Because the drugs that he takes are so intense and very strong.”
Squid Game’s third and final season is now set to be released on Netflix on June 27.
