‘Squid Game’ American Spinoff: Everything We Know So Far

The third season’s final scene leaves many questions unanswered for Squid Game’s fans, but they most likely get a resolution in a potential new TV series (and David Fincher might have something to do with it).
Squid Game’s brand new season 3 might have wrapped its story for good now, but the season’s final scene has reassured the show’s fans that it will continue to live on even without Hwang Dong-hyuk’s participation.
With all the rumours surrounding a potential Squid Game spinoff ever since October of last year, it does seem like Netflix isn’t yet ready to let one of its biggest hits ever go that soon, possibly bringing the games from South Korea to the US.
Even though Cate Blanchett’s surprising cameo role was never meant to be some sort of hint at an American spinoff anyway, there have been some major speculations about Squid Game’s universe extension lately. Here’s everything we now know about a potential spinoff.
Is ‘Squid Game’ American Spinoff Already in Development?
So far, Netflix hasn’t given any update on whether it will in fact be developing the hit show’s spinoff.
Upon the third season’s release on June 27, several outlets revealed that the streamer had no intention to start working on the project at the moment, though it doesn’t rule out a possibility of doing so in the near future anyway.
The speculation grew louder as fans started weighing in on the importance of Cate Blanchett’s role as an American Recruiter in the third season’s finale, suggesting the plot twist and the actress’ surprising cameo would serve as a perfect set-up for another Squid Game show.
However, the original series’ director Hwang Dong-hyuk debunked this theory, saying that his idea was to show that, whether the games were brought down in South Korea or not, they would still continue on a different continent, signalling that the system is yet too strong to be destroyed completely.
What About David Fincher’s ‘Squid Game’ Spinoff?
Rumors about the development of the series’ American version started circulating way earlier than Squid Game’s final season came out and, on top of that, even before its second instalment was released back in December.
In October last year, Deadline reported that David Fincher was in talks to helm an English-language show based on Squid Game, with Netflix also becoming the main distributor.
Though insiders insisted the director was determined to dedicate all of his time to his Squid Game version this year, so far there have been no updates about the matter, including plot details, cast and a possible release date.
Fincher’s show is still believed to start its production this December though, but those rumours remain unconfirmed.
