The show is coming to its end this Friday — or maybe not yet? Here’s what idea for Squid Game’s future director Hwang Dong-hyuk has in mind.

One of Netflix’s biggest hits of all time, Squid Game is about to wrap the story on June 27, but the streamer may not let the show go that soon.

Ahead of the second season’s premiere back in December, the series’ helmer Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed he would be done with Squid Game as soon as the final third instalment came out, highlighting how much he had to endure to bring the story to life after all those years it spent in development hell.

However, things might have changed radically, with Dong-hyuk recently sharing his take on a potential Squid Game continuation.

Hwang Dong-hyuk Says He Isn’t Going to “Close the Door” to ‘Squid Game’ Sequels or Spinoffs

Even though there’s definitely no way for the show to continue with a fourth season, the director doesn’t deny that the story can still be expanded with prequels, sequels or spinoff shows.

And there’s one idea he’s been focused on recently.

“I actually had this faint ideation about possibly a spinoff — not a sequel, but maybe a spinoff about the three-year gap between season 1 and season 2 when Gi-hun [Lee Jung-jae] looks around for the recruiters. There is that three-year period, and maybe I could have a portrayal of what the recruiters or Captain Park [Oh Dal-su] or officers or masked men were doing in that period, not inside the gaming arena, but their life outside of that”, Dong-hyuk revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the third season’s release.

However, he still reassured everyone that the upcoming instalment will be the definite finale, though he’s open to explore some dark corners of the already existing story.

“I'm not trying to say that I'm going to close the door to spinoffs or sequels altogether because they say never say never”, the director added.

Fans Aren’t Really Excited About ‘Squid Game’ Potential Spinoff

Even though some might be willing to see what’s next for Seong Gi-hun after the third season’s finale, others wish the story would end right where it’s supposed to — and there’s no need for prequels or spinoffs either.

“The spinoff idea doesn't sound great tbh. I'll likely be done with "Squid Game" after I watch this last batch of episodes coming out this week”, Redditor CRoseCrizzle admitted in a show-related thread.

“I think the story of a recruiter would be an interesting movie, not sure about a show, then again the last few years have shown that unlikely spinoffs can really impress”, r_lucasite retorted.

“This is when the series goes downhill”, soulwolf1 stated.
