It’s always hard to say goodbye.

Summary:

  • Doctor Who is a British science fiction television show that has been on the air for more than 60 years.
  • The second showrunner of the show's revival, Steven Moffat, left the position back in 2017.
  • According to Moffat himself, he doesn't plan to return to Doctor Who.

One of the best things about Doctor Who is its longevity. Although most people around the world are only familiar with the latest iteration of the show, the Doctor's adventures have been something of a national treasure in the UK since 1963.

The story of an alien traveling through time and space on various adventures is so beloved by viewers that it can easily unite generations. People of all ages and statuses share a love for their favorite Doctors, companions, or other species that recur in the show.

From time to time, Doctor Who fans get nostalgic for the good old days and want the show to bring someone back. Whether it is an actor or a writer, it certainly shows how the audience felt about them during their run. Even the most controversial figures still have a huge following within the Whovian fandom.

Why Steven Moffat Won’t Be Back To Doctor Who

Steven Moffat, who was the second showrunner of the revived version of the show, was heavily criticized during his run for changing Doctor Who's sci-fi style to a fairy tale style. The Eleventh Doctor era, with which he took over, felt like a completely new show, and not everyone was on board.

Now that Doctor Who is on the verge of yet another change, with Russell T. Davies starting over in collaboration with Disney Plus, it seems that fans are ready to turn back to Moffat. Unfortunately, he's not planning on returning anytime soon. Steven Moffat talked about a possible return on RadioTimes:

“Look at my ageing face. How can I fit in? <...> The truth is, if I say anything negative about Doctor Who it goes everywhere, like boom, everywhere, right? It doesn't exactly bring joy to the world that I just say something negative about Doctor Who. The fact is, it's fine without me,” he said.

Many fans who preferred Moffat's quirky view of Doctor Who might disagree with that statement, but there is nothing left for us to do but accept a reality. If the writer feels he has nothing more to add to the story, then viewers can only agree and hope that Russell T. Davies, who is now in charge of the show, will do it justice.

However, if you are upset by this news, the good thing is that you can always go back and give your favorite Moffat episodes or arcs.

Whether you prefer the youthful persona of the Eleventh Doctor, who also delivered some of the show's heaviest speeches, or the sarcastic bickering between the Twelfth and his companions, Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.

Keep an eye out for the release date of season 14, starring Ncuti Gatwa, on Disney Plus.
