Can there ever be too many Supernatural seasons, anyway?

Summary:

  • Supernatural ended in 2020 after a 15-reason run
  • There has been no official confirmation the show will get a new season or a reboot
  • However, Reddit fans have come up with an idea for a perfect villain for an entire season

No matter what you think of the Supernatural grand finale, the show is definitely already a part of TV history. With Sam and Dean Winchester finally parking their Impala in 2020, the Supernatural fandom has been left to reflect and remember; and even the 2022 spinoff, The Winchesters, did not quite bring back that good old vibe (although it desperately tried in its finale).

The Supernatural finale was a lot to process; some people hated it for robbing Destiel fans of all hopes, while others raised their eyebrows at the way the show killed off Dean. However, the fandom largely agrees that even 15 seasons were simply too much for Supernatural.

So, is the idea of reviving the show even worth considering?

Will There Be Supernatural Season 16?

Having wrapped up in 2020 after fifteen seasons, Supernatural has not announced that it will be coming back any time soon. In fact, both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have stated they are over the show, even though Ackles did his best to try and bring back the Supernatural vibes in his spinoff, The Winchesters.

The CW made it clear it would keep Supernatural going if the ratings were high enough, but the creators also admitted that the story needed a strong ending before it turned into a pathetic parody of itself (which, according to some fans, had already happened after season 5).

However, Redditors still roll out their suggestions for a hypothetical season 16 every now and then. One of them seems particularly entertaining.

The Styne Family

Those who insist Supernatural can't go on because both brothers are dead seem to forget just how many times the Winchesters simply came back from Hell, Heaven, Purgatory, and basically every single version of the underworld one can imagine. Still, the idea that Reddit has come up with would work more effectively with an earlier season rather than the sixteenth chapter.

Remember the Styne family? The House of Frankenstein, introduced to Supernatural in season 10, had a lot more to offer than the show ever allowed — at least that's what many fans think up to these days. They might as well have been a perfect "big bad" for an entire season — after season 10, there were plenty of possibilities for that before things skyrocketed to the God vs. Darkness scale.

If not an entire season's big bad, then the Stynes could have been reoccurring villains — just like Crowley was before being "promoted" to a regular.

"Having super humans added to the mixed occasionally would have been nice. Because for me the Stynes were more than a monster of the week type. They were a legacy of human monstrosity where the boys were a legacy of human protectors. Mostly I just wanted the variety of enemies. I got sick of seeing the same 4 enemy types over and over," Redditor ChaosReigning noted.

What Happened to the Styne Family in Supernatural?

However, instead of developing their potential, the Supernatural writers decided to simply wipe them out of the picture by having Dean slaughtering the American branch of the house. This remains a huge disappointment to many Supernatural fans; not only it illustrates just how far gone Dean was, but it also robbed the fandom of a potentially exciting storyline that wasn't your average "monster of the week" situation.

Still, if there ever will be a Supernatural reboot or a sixteenth season, it's worth noting that the Styne family has its members all around the world, and they can always come back in some form...
