Why make this change at all, if you’re not going to show it?

Summary:

  • The Buccaneers is an Apple TV Plus romantic period drama based on Edith Wharton's novel of the same name.
  • Although the show keeps the same characters, some of the storylines have changed significantly.
  • Nan's illegitimacy is one such detail added to the show, but fans feel it doesn't add much to the plot.

Although The Buccaneers passed all of the Apple TV Plus tests with flying colors and was quickly renewed for a second season, the vast majority of viewers are not so sure about the quality of the show. While many came for the Bridgerton- like swooning effect of modernized period drama, not as many stayed to watch a love triangle that made no sense at all.

Fans of more traditional period dramas were quick to abandon the show in the beginning, while those who stayed questioned their decision weekly as each episode passed. Were it not for the general curiosity and solid acting skills of the cast, The Buccaneers would probably be considered a flop.

What makes the audience even more concerned are all the changes the writers have made to the original novel by Edith Wharton. Some of them, like Lizzy's assault by Seadown, were somewhat justified by the plot. Others, like Nan's illegitimacy, have only added to the overall confusion.

Nan and Her Biological Mother In The Buccaneers Season 2

From what we as viewers can only guess at this point, Nan's storyline was supposed to lead to some sort of journey of self-discovery that would define her identity. However, the execution of such a journey ended up being completely non-existent.

If anything, the question of Nan's origin ended up being used only as a driving force for the love triangle with Guy and Theo, which definitely did not need any more fuel to function. Perhaps with a little less focus on this ultimate choice throughout the season, and a little more attention to Nan's self-perception, The Buccaneers could benefit in all ways.

Viewers would be less tired of the triangle and more intrigued by it in the grand finale, and Nan wouldn't turn out to be as shallow as she was. Too bad the writers' priorities were different from the fans' perception.

However, there is still a chance to justify a canon change and make Nan at least a little more likable in season 2. With 8 more episodes to follow and develop the story, viewers expect Nan's biological mother to play a major role.

If she doesn't, or if the illegitimacy issue is just swept under the rug and the show goes back to the ‘cheating behind Theo's back’ scenario, another renewal is highly unlikely.

For now, there is no further information on the development and production of The Buccaneers season 2. Keep an eye out for more behind-the-scenes news and updates to be the first to know about filming and release dates!
