The DIY Origins of Michael Myers’ Mask: A William Shatner Connection

How a £1.50 William Shatner mask became Halloween’s most terrifying icon.
Michael Myers, the chilling figure from the Halloween franchise, is infamous for his eerie rubber mask — a creation with an unusual and surprisingly low-budget origin. Tommy Lee Wallace, the production designer on the original film, was tasked with crafting the mask under tight financial constraints.
To achieve the desired effect, Wallace visited a Hollywood costume shop and purchased a William Shatner mask for just $1.98. Shatner, of course, is best known for his role as Captain Kirk in the original Star Trek series.
Wallace then transformed the mask by spray-painting it white, enlarging the eyeholes, and disheveling the hair to create the haunting visage that has become synonymous with Michael Myers.
In a humorous twist, William Shatner himself later revealed that he wore the mask while trick-or-treating years after the film’s release, adding a quirky footnote to the legacy of one of horror cinema’s most iconic images.
