The Only David Tennant Project With 100% on Rotten Tomatoes Is 16 Years Old
Even if you are not a Shakespeare fan, check this out.
One of the most popular Scottish actors, David Tennant, is known for his many iconic roles, such as those in Doctor Who and Good Omens, or the more recent Rivals. Everything he does, from appearing in sitcoms to portraying serial killers, earns critical and fan acclaim. But what if we told you there's more?
According to Rotten Tomatoes, while there are a lot of near-perfect movies and shows starring Tennant, there's only one project that managed to get a 100% score from critics. And it’s a pretty old one.
David Tennant’s Hamlet Is His Only Project With Perfect RT Score
In 2008, David portrayed Hamlet in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet, which later became a BBC television adaptation in 2009.
Gregory Doran’s Hamlet was a groundbreaking production that combined traditional Shakespearean elements with contemporary staging. And Tennant's performance not only cemented his reputation as a versatile and deeply talented actor, but also became a cultural milestone in modern Shakespearean theater.
“This is one of the best 'modern' versions of Hamlet I have seen. David Tennant's version of the 'O, that this too too solid flesh' monologue is particularly haunting,” one Redditor said.
His portrayal of the melancholy Danish prince was celebrated as electrifying, capturing both the character's humor and his existential agony and despair. But the thing is, it couldn't have worked in such a perfect way it did without the amazing supporting cast.
The director's rather interesting decision was to have Patrick Stewart play two roles at once. And not just any roles: Stewart played both Claudius and the Ghost. Many fans were confused by this choice at first, but later realized how brilliant a move it was, and how it added several layers to the centuries-old story.
“I always find it quite interesting- the man to play the murdered and the murderer, both himself and his brother. Perhaps sometimes it is to highlight the similarities between Claudius and old king Hamlet, perhaps we are seeing through young Hamlet’s eyes that Claudius is trying to replace his father. Or it is simply a visual poeticism to really make that idea known to the audience, that Claudius in every way is trying to replace his brother,” Redditor Constant-Election717 said.
RSC’s Hamlet is available to stream on AppleTV+.
