Place your bets.

Summary:

  • The Rookie is an ABC police procedural drama that follows 40-year-old John Nolan as he joins the police force.
  • The show has just reached a milestone of 100 episodes.
  • The show's EP and star, Nathan Fillion, admits that the guest star that stood out to him the most was SNL's Pete Davidson.

One of the reasons why people love The Rookie so much is the show's entertainment factor. Even though it is set as a police procedural, it is not filled with unnecessary drama. From the very first episode, the show simply invites viewers to follow a lovable and slightly lost man who wants to change both his life and the world around him.

Now that the show has reached its 100th episode, it's almost impossible to recognize the man John Nolan, The Rookie, has become. It has been a great journey so far, with many accomplishments and fun moments to look back on, including all the search stars the show has hosted.

From the star of another crime procedural, Bones, Emily Deschanel, to Fillion's on-screen Castle daughter, Molly Quinn, there have been many wonderful actors who have made appearances and left an impact on the story. One, however, took the lead as the most notable cameo to date.

Pete Davidson on The Rookie

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Fillion was quick to name the guest star that stood out to him the most.

Perhaps it was one of the least expected names, not only for Fillion himself, but for The Rookie's core audience as well.

“When I first met him, I thought, “He and I are probably not going to be best pals.” And within four minutes, I was embarrassed and ashamed because I’d judged a book by its cover. <...> Within two or three days, I invited him to do an episode, and he graciously accepted. He’s wildly talented and always brings a flavor to the character that’s realistic,” he explained.

Pete Davidson made not one, but several appearances on The Rookie as John Nolan's troublesome younger half-brother, also coincidentally named Pete. Though things are never easy with Pete, John seems to have formed a nice bond with him by season 4, so the real-life friendship between Fillion and Davidson translates to the screen.

The character is carefree and comedic, and that's what viewers seem to love about The Rookie. Despite the heavy focus on police life and investigations, the show manages to maintain a balance between drama and humor. The show has been perfecting this balance for 100 episodes now, and many wish it would last at least another 100.

If you didn't get a chance to see The Hammer episode when it aired, join the celebration and stream it on Hulu. Tune in to ABC every Tuesday to never miss another episode of The Rookie.
