'The Sandman' S2 Trailer Proves Bitter Truth: It May Be the Most Painful Finale in Netflix History

The Sandman could be the new Stranger Things for Netflix, but the behind-the-scenes controversy has ruined it. The new trailer for season 2 proves that fans aren’t ready to say goodbye. Too bad they have to.
On Tuesday, June 17, Netflix released an official trailer for The Sandman’s second and final season. Many things were teased, from the Endless family reunion to return of the Corinthian and even Dream’s potential big sacrifice. Fans are already saying that season 2 looks even better than the already near-perfect season 1 — according to them, The Sandman deserves at least 5 seasons.
However, this isn’t going to happen because of the scandal around the graphic novel series author Neil Gaiman, who is accused of sexual assault. As soon as the controversy unfolded, Netflix quickly announced the cancellation of The Sandman, and the fact that Gaiman denies the allegations didn’t help.
Will Dream Die in ‘The Sandman’ Season 2?
Season 2 is The Sandman’s grand finale, and the trailer makes sure fans feel as bad about it as possible: Dream is heard directly hinting at his potential death when he says “The Dreaming will survive, even if I do not.” Let’s face it: Dream dying in the final season looks very plausible now, because the odds of The Sandman ever being revived are very low.
In fact, many fans admit that even if The Sandman wasn’t canceled so hastily, Dream’s arc won’t have too many loose ends even if it ends completely in season 2.
“To be fair, unless you are bothered about supplemental material that really has nothing to do with anything, the overall story of Morpheus really is not very long whatsoever and can probably very easily be finished with one second season,” one fan said in the comments for the trailer.
But some disagree.
“Two seasons for a story of this magnitude is laughable, prepare for atrocity,” said Redditor jahkut.
‘The Sandman’ Could Be Netflix’s New Big Thing
Aside from fans being confident that The Sandman deserved more seasons, it’s clear that Netflix has to basically shoot itself in the leg with the cancellation.
Even the release schedule proves The Sandman’s popularity and potential: the fact that the season is split in two parts puts the show in line with such big hits as Stranger Things and Wednesday, both of which received the same treatment.
The first season also reached over 120 million hours viewed in its premiere week and even appeared in “most watched” lists.
When the cancellation was officially announced in late January of 2025, the show’s creators were quick to say that The Sandman wasn’t planned to last for several more seasons.
“‘The Sandman’ series has always been focused exclusively on Dream’s story, and back in 2022, when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season,” showrunner Allan Heinberg told Variety.
‘The Sandman’ Season 2 Release Date
The second season of ‘The Sandman’ is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 premieres on Netflix on July 3, with Volume 2 following on July 24.
