Don’t miss one of the loudest hits of 2023!

Summary:

  • Last year the world saw the drama, following a family with a shocking age difference, explored by an actress coming to their house.
  • It’s based on the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau.
  • You should give it a try if you liked The Reader and Notes on a Scandal.

Prime’s prominent chart leader, Anne Hathaway ’s romantic comedy The Idea of You has rekindled people’s interest in the movies exploring the topic of the romances between people with significant age differences. However, in the case of Hathaway’s movie and other similar romcoms the age-gaps are still within the bounds of law and moral.

There is a movie, brutally showing the other side of such romances. It was one of the main hits of the last year and nowadays it’s still watched by Prime Video ’s viewers a lot.

Its plot revolves around an actress in the research for her upcoming role in an independent film. We learn that she is set to play Gracie, a woman, infamous for seducing a 13 year-old boy Joe when she was 36 and was imprisoned for rape of him.

The point is that Gracie and Joe are still together, 24 years after the incident, married and raising their three children in Georgia. Thus, the Gracie actress, Elizabeth, comes there to see how they’re now living and how their romance works with her own eyes.

This synopsis can remind you of the movies, also raising the issue of the forbidden romances with big age differences. For instance, Cate Blanchett’s Notes on a Scandal (2006) and Kate Winslet ’s The Reader (2008), where the actresses portrayed the women involved in secret romances with the younger boys.

Surprisingly, another fact unites Notes on a Scandal and the 2023 drama: they’re both loosely based on the real-life story of Mary Kay Letourneau, a teacher who abused her 12-year-old student, was imprisoned for it and later married her victim.

The movie assembles an incredibly great cast: it stars Natalie Portman as the cunning Elizabeth, Julianne Moore as Gracie and Riverdale ’s Charles Melton as Joe. The latter’s performance is particularly remarkable here, as he perfectly managed to depict Joe’s inner conflicts and regrets about the lost youth and the whole lost life he gave to Gracie.
