Between heroic rescues and all the love drama, Chicago Fire has its fair share of heartbreak. These two storylines were enough to make fans cry… We are the fans.

Summary:

  • Chicago Fire has its share of heartbreaking episodes, but these two were undoubtedly the hardest to watch.
  • In S1E19, A Coffin That Small, we watched a small kid die at the hospital after being rescued by the firefighters.
  • In S8E1, Sacred Ground, we learned that Otis had died in the Arnow Mattress Fire and watched his friends struggle with his loss.

Chicago Fire might seem like a show about the true heroes risking their lives to save others at first glance. After some time, you recognize the firefighting soap opera it truly is.

But between all of that, there’s another side to our favorite show — the most brutal side, as its whole purpose is to get the audience sobbing and wasting a bunch of paper towels for no good reason.

These two episodes are the pinnacle of Chicago Fire heartbreak, to the point where many fans actually skip them on rewatch to avoid getting teary-eyed again.

S1E19: A Coffin That Small

From the title alone, it was clear as day that this episode would be a tough one; and a tough one it was. When Firehouse 51 gets a call from a neighbor kid and arrives at the scene, they find a little boy, the kid’s brother, stuck in an old laundry chute in a wall. The firefighters grab their gear and free the boy as quickly as they can.

Between the other storylines, some of the firefighters visit the boy at the hospital; despite their best efforts, the kid is badly injured. At the start of their next shift, the Firehouse 51 crew learns that he’d died. Devastated, the firefighters gather to pay tribute to the poor boy who, as they learn from his mother, used to idolize them.

S8E1: Sacred Ground

The premiere episode of Season 8 was expected to deliver a tough blow: the finale of the previous season left the beloved characters on a cliffhanger. The Arnow Mattress Fire, the call that proved to be far more dangerous than anticipated, had spiraled completely out of control, and it was sure to become someone’s demise.

Sacred Ground revealed the unfortunate hero who died trying to stop the massive fire. It was Otis, the man beloved equally by his colleagues and fans at home. Throughout the rest of the episode, the other firefighters (especially Cruz) struggled with accepting the fact that Otis had died, and dealing with the fire’s fallout.
