A little bit of John Wick, a pinch of Oldboy, a strong female character — and you have the perfect action show.

The release of the sensational drama Oldboy in the early 2000s brought South Korean cinema into the spotlight. And in the decades that followed it only consolidated its position, becoming an important part of global culture.

Parasite took home an Academy Award, and Squid Game became Netflix 's most popular series, topping the charts in 90 countries after its premiere.

Kim Jin-min's crime drama came out a month after Squid Game and was overshadowed by its hype. But this brutal tale of revenge also has something to surprise you, from dark philosophizing in the spirit of Oldboy to action in the style of John Wick.

What is My Name About?

The classic premise of My Name may even seem a little too simple: a member of a dangerous criminal group, Yoon Dong-hoon, is killed on his daughter Yoon Ji-woo's birthday right in front of her.

The grieving girl turns to the police, but finds no support, so she goes to the boss of the criminal organization her father belonged to – Choi Mu-jin. He explains the indifference of the police – Yoon Ji-woo's father was shot by a policeman.

The girl becomes obsessed with revenge: in the following years she studies martial arts and enters the academy to infiltrate the police force.

My Name is Dynamic Female Lead Crime Drama

My Name is director Kim Jin-min's second series for Netflix. A year earlier, the director made his debut on the platform with Extracurricular, a series about high school students who get involved in crime, which became one of the top ten most popular k-dramas on Netflix.

My Name again refers to the topic of life on the other side of the law. It is a story of revenge, without any social overtones that are so often present in Korean projects, and it is performed in the best tradition of spectacular, high-profile action films.

The fact that there is a female character at the center of the story makes it doubly interesting. In order to make it to the top in a world of ruthless men, the main character has to work twice as hard.

But it's only when Yoon Ji-woo finally finishes her training My Name reveals its full potential: thanks to the excellently choreographed and filmed fights it's hard to tear yourself away from the screen.

My Name has a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, so what are you waiting for?
