This fan favorite episode broke records not once, but twice, and became one of the most remarkable stories Charlie Brooker has ever created.

On April 10, Netflix premiered the seventh season of Black Mirror, a cult anthology series that explores the dark side of technological progress.

Over the course of seven seasons, we seem to have seen it all – chips implanted in the brain, metaverses, mind reading devices, and a world where everything is controlled by social ratings.

However, the most acclaimed and awarded episode of the entire series is a rather simple story – USS Callister, which won four Emmys in 2018.

What Was USS Callister About?

When the images of the episode first appeared, all viewers had one thought: “Why is this episode parodying Star Trek? ” As we suspected, the setting of an old space show turned out to be just a decoy for another technological trap.

Jesse Plemons plays a genius virtual reality developer who is considered a pariah at work, so in the evenings he escapes into a virtual version of his favorite TV show. There, he brings along digital clones of his colleagues so that, at least there, he can control them as an all-powerful captain.

USS Callister Is the First Episode in Black Mirror History to Receive a Direct Sequel

USS Callister can be called the most unique episode of Black Mirror, not only because it received the most awards, but also because it is the only episode that received a direct sequel.

The final sixth episode of the new season was USS Callister: Into Infinity, which received the highest score of all the new stories – 8.3 on IMDb.

Critics and Fans Both Loved USS Callister: Into Infinity

And you'd have to work hard to find a single negative review of this episode – USS Callister: Into Infinity is easily the highlight of the new season. As Reddit user freddyfrm wrote:

“I loved this episode, I thought it was awesome. I could watch a whole season of just USS Callister alone.”

The critics agreed with the viewers, acknowledging that the sequel was one of the best episodes of the new season. Daniel D'Addario of Variety said:

“USS Callister: Into Infinity dazzled me with how far it was able to push beyond the premise of its seemingly closed-ended predecessor.”

So even if you've never seen Black Mirror before, USS Clallister and USS Callister: Into Infinity are a great introduction to the cult anthology – these two episodes capture the spirit of old-school Black Mirror while offering fresh ideas.

What Do Critics and Fans Think of Black Mirror Season 7?

  • Black Mirror Season 7 has an 89% score on Rotten Tomatoes, second only to the first chapter, which received 98%.

  • On IMDb, the average rating for Season 7 episodes is 7.8/10.
