Taika Waititi has gone from being a beloved MCU director to the one fans don't want near Thor again.

After Waititi reinvented Thor in 2017's Ragnarok, the MCU fans doted on the director and looked forward to Love and Thunder becoming one of the best Marvel experiences.

However, the fourth installment in the Thor franchise became a huge disappointment for many viewers and received mixed reviews from critics. Not a single fan would deny that Love and Thunder felt inferior to Ragnarok. This made Waititi's fame and the love of the MCU audience suddenly fade away.

Now, many fans doubt that Waititi is the best candidate to direct Thor 5.

"I personally am a little Taika'd out after watching Love and Thunder," as one of the MCU fans put it on Reddit.

But what does Waititi think about returning to the MCU? The director told Insider the promised continuation of the Thor franchise that appeared at the end of the credits came as a surprise to both him and Chris Hemsworth. But Waititi expressed confidence that the widely likable and "fun to watch" character was always supposed to return. So he would not mind doing one more Thor movie with one condition.

"I would definitely do one, but only if Chris did it," Waititi said.

The director added that he would also like to make something unexpected and surprising with the new movie, to take a fresh look at the fan-favorite character. He explained (probably jokingly) that it would be very unusual for a superhero film to not feature any fighting at all but be a low-budget road movie instead.

What's interesting, Chris Hemsworth does share the same sentiment. Thor star told Total Film that he would do Thor 5 if it was something very different from the previous four movies.

The actor added that "different writers and directors" can provide a fresh take on his character, so the MCU fans started wondering if the actor agreed with the fans' opinion and wanted someone other than Waititi to direct the next Thor movie.

In any case, neither Waititi nor Hemsworth said a firm "no" to Thor 5. So with all the box office success of the franchise, fans are most likely to expect the new installment sooner rather than later. The question remains if the new movie will bring a fresh look at the Norse God and his story.
