But in the most mysterious way possible.

Since the first Terrifier, Art the Clown has become a horror icon — silent, sadistic, and increasingly inventive in his brutality. Yet one thing remains hidden: who — or what — is he really?

By the third film, it’s clear Art isn’t just a human killer. Hints of supernatural possession creep in, and now director Damien Leone has confirmed that Terrifier 4 will dive into the clown’s origin.

A Lynchian Backstory

In a recent Collider interview, Leone revealed that he plans to tell Art’s story not with neat answers, but through symbols and eerie atmosphere — drawing inspiration from David Lynch.

"I love the way he tells stories, and they’re very abstract. He doesn’t give you answers. If he ever tried to articulate, it would trivialize and diminish the beauty of what he’s done as an artist," Leone explained. That same approach will keep Art terrifying even as his history comes to light.

Fan theories already suggest Art may have once been a serial killer possessed by demons — a theory that would explain both his cruelty and his connection to darker forces.

From Indie to Cult Phenomenon

Art’s first appearance was just a small role in a 2013 horror anthology. Three years later, Terrifier arrived with a budget of only $50,000 — and still grossed nearly half a million.

The sequel, made for $250,000, shocked everyone by earning $15 million. And then Terrifier 3 smashed records in 2024 with $90 million worldwide — even outperforming Joker 2.

Leone admits he has more ideas than one film can hold, and hints that the next installment might be split in two. Either way, fans have plenty of nightmare fuel ahead.

Personally, I’m torn: part of me craves a full origin story, while another part thinks Art is scarier as an enigma. Maybe Leone’s Lynchian approach is the perfect compromise.
