Who is Alice in Furious? What to know about Emmy Rossum's FBI agent in Hulu's hit thriller, from her NYPD past to the discovery that reframes her entire investigation.
FBI Agent Alice Black has had, and I cannot stress this enough, a season. Emmy Rossum's character in Hulu's Furious started the show manning the tip line — the bureau's equivalent of a time-out chair — and has since gone rogue so many times that "rogue" is now just her job description.
The Résumé
Alice is a former NYPD homicide detective who became persona non grata the moment she reported her detective boyfriend, Marshall (Jake Lacy, radiating menace in business casual), for putting her in the hospital. The department picked his side. She landed at the FBI, in the basement, answering phones — until a rich man's corpse and a 2012 Jane Doe gave her a case nobody wanted her to solve.
Since then she has:
- Connected the Jane Doe to Catherine's killing spree before anyone else in the building;
- Pulled a gun on Marshall (deserved), gotten benched for it (predictable);
- Gone undercover in a women's shelter, posing as a sex worker to get close to the most wanted woman in America — no badge, no backup, no permission.
That last move is the one Rossum herself flagged as the point of no return.
"The beast has been unleashed," Rossum told Gold Derby about Alice going off-book.
The Folder
And then episode 6 detonated the whole premise. When the FBI finally opened Jay Easton's stolen archive — years of evidence against the billionaire — there it was among the files: a folder labeled Alice.
The hunter is in the predator's records. The show hasn't said why. Whatever the answer is, it means Alice was never investigating this case from the outside — and there are two episodes left to explain what she was doing on the inside.
