NBC's new family drama sits down a houseful of federal agents for dinner and introduces the daughter's boyfriend. By the end of the hour, the dinner turns out to be the least honest thing in the episode.

Line of Fire premiered on NBC on September 21, 2026, and creator Joshua Safran pitched it with one line: a family of law enforcement agents whose "biggest adversary is their own child," per Give Me My Remote. The pilot plays like a standard procedural for most of its hour. Its last few minutes rewrite the family, and the second episode rewrites the person you thought was the victim.

The Hollingsworths are a family business of badges:

  • Mike (Peter Krause): A Secret Service agent nearing retirement who still has doubts about his last case.
  • Jane (Hope Davis): A U.S. marshal and Mike's wife.
  • Clare (Kat Cunning): An FBI special agent.
  • Micah (Tommy O'Brien): Secret Service, assigned to protect the First Daughter, with whom he's secretly sleeping.
  • Russ (Taylor Bloom): At the Justice Department, and suspicious that Mike got him the job to gather intel on that last case.

The twist

The episode's case is a marshal and a fugitive found dead in a forest, staged to look like they killed each other. The real story happens at the family dinner where the Hollingsworths meet Clare's boyfriend, Logan (Pico Alexander), a history teacher. Russ lets slip that Clare isn't the eldest. There was a brother, Jack, Mike's son from his first marriage, who served in Afghanistan, turned to drugs and alcohol and died, per Primetimer.

Logan storms out, upset that Clare never told him. When he comes back and looks through the family photos, he recognizes Jack as his next-door neighbor. Jack (Charlie Barnett) is alive, and he's been living beside Clare's boyfriend under another name.

Jack stabs Logan and tells him the truth on the way down, and Logan dies:

"So I'm not who I said I was, but neither are you, Agent Anderson."

— Jack, to Logan, in the pilot

When Mike and Jane get home, they find a silver origami crane in the house, and they're visibly shaken. Safran told Soap Central he cut an earlier scene of the neighbor urging Logan to go back and apologize, because viewers who saw it found the neighbor suspicious. "We removed it, suddenly people were surprised."

Why Logan was never random

"Agent Anderson" was the first hint, and episode 2, "A Bigger Picture," which aired September 28, confirmed it. Homeland Security agent Nia Wallace (Antoinette Crowe-Legacy) digs into Logan and finds his history-teacher life was built for him: his identity was "backstopped," and he was an undercover CIA operative, per Seat42F's recap. Wallace believes Clare was his assignment.

The show hasn't answered the obvious follow-ups yet: what the CIA wanted with Clare, whether Logan's feelings were real and whether he knew Jack was alive. It does make one thing clear. Jack knew Logan's real name before anyone at that dinner did.

Clare brought home a boyfriend who was spying on her. The only person at the table who saw through him was the brother the family says is dead.

What we know about Jack

Episode 2 shows why Mike and Jane believed he might be dead: the emergency contact tied to his assignment leads nowhere, and the last paycheck under his alias went out more than a year ago. Jane also raises the possibility that someone who knew Jack is using the cranes as a signature. The episode closes with Jack photographing Clare and Wallace from a distance.

Safran told TVLine that every family member has a different theory about why Jack died or left, and none of them are right. "They never have the real answers," he said. He also promised that "all the answers will come out in the course of this season," with flashbacks showing Jack with his family.

Line of Fire airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC. Safran's pitch promised a family whose worst enemy is their own child. The pilot's victim turned out to be a spy, and the killer turned out to be family.
