Why The Pitt Season 2 Will Skip Flashbacks Despite a One-Year Time Jump, Explained by Creator

The Max hit medical drama is now set to return with its second season in January of 2026, but there will be nothing for us to sneak into what happened throughout almost an entire year. Here’s what The Pitt’s creators plan for the show’s next instalment.
A second season for Max’s massive hit The Pitt will take a while to arrive, yet some major events in between will be left a secret forever.
The show will continue with its format of just one day spent at the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center, though will still adapt some changes, considering that there will be roughly a year in between both seasons’ timeline.
Now that The Pitt’s sophomore season has officially entered its production phase, the series’ creators have given a sneak peek into what to expect from a new instalment — however, some pretty much expected flashback scenes are not on this list.
There Will Be No Flashback Scenes in The Pitt Season 2 — Here’s Why
Since the show’s first season turned out to be pretty messy, it might be fair to say fans would be eager to know what’s in store for its most compelling characters.
That said, the time jump between two seasons will likely cover Dr. Frank Langdon’s time in a rehab before coming back to the hospital, Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch’s struggle with PTSD and a huge loss that concerned him too, as well as Dr. Heather Collins’ own health issues.
Still, as intriguing as this all could have become, scenes like this aren’t really the show’s priority.
“That’s not the show. We start at 7 am and end at 10 pm, and I think that’s what worked for us. It comes with its challenges, but that’s also what makes it fun, because you’re playing in this tight little box”, The Pitt’s creator R. Scott Gemmill revealed in an interview with TVLine.
Will Robby Forgive Dr. Langdon in Season 2? Explained by The Pitt’s Creator
The show’s season 1 ended on a major cliffhanger, suggesting Patrick Ball’s Dr. Langdon won’t be back to the hospital until he goes through a rehab program.
However, there’s also Robby’s trust that he has to earn back too – but that might be just a matter of time since The Pitt’s creators aren’t ready to say goodbye to the character that easily.
“I think it’ll be different for a long time, but it also goes in two directions, right? It’s not just Robby having to forgive Langdon. I think Robby has to take into account his own bulls—t, which is what Langdon sort of called him on [in the finale]. No, Robby wasn’t using drugs, but he has never come to terms with his own mental health issues, and so I think that’s what Langdon was really getting at”, Gemmill said about the matter.
Still, he added that fans in fact should expect some improvement in Robby and Dr. Langdon’s relationship, but it’s “going to take some time, and with the nature of our show, it’s a little bit tough, because we’re only showing that relationship over 15 hours. You can only do so much in 15 hours”.
When Is The Pitt Season 2 Being Released?
The show’s second season is expected to premiere on Max sometime in January of 2026.
