This 2021 star-studded action comedy with Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot was destroyed by the critics — but the audience adores it to this day.

Summary:

  • Netflix ’s all-time most popular movie list is crowned by an action-packed comedy with The Rock and Ryan Reynolds.
  • Despite having a terrible 37% Critic Score, the movie is loved by viewers who gave it a staggering 92% Audience Score.
  • It’s a classic example of critics judging a film too harshly while the audience finds it delightful and pleasant to watch.

It’s not rare that critics and viewers don’t agree on movies, but this one is really special: demolished by most media, this action heist comedy conquered the hearts and minds of its audience. Three years after its release, the movie still dominates Netflix’s top movies chart — and has spectacular fan reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Red Notice: a Great Popcorn Crime Movie

Rawson Marshall Thurber’s Red Notice was released in 2021 and had all the makings of a spectacular one-night popcorn movie. It’s an action comedy with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, and it’s set against the backdrop of luxurious life, high-end crimes, and a whole lot of backstabbing.

Red Notice follows an Interpol agent trying to catch a notorious art thief with the help of another dangerous thief. They’re all hunting for the three legendary bejeweled eggs Mark Antony gifted to Cleopatra in the last century BC, and to find them all, they need to forge unlikely alliances — and double-cross each other at every turn.

Red Notice: Hated by Critics, Loved by Viewers

The audience and critics rarely share the same opinion about movies, and Red Notice is no exception. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is destroyed by the media with a 37% Critic Score — but glorified by viewers who gave it a whopping 92% Audience Score. The former call it middling at best; the latter say it delivers it all.

But even Rotten Tomatoes doesn’t quite give Red Notice its well-deserved credit; Netflix, however, does. Three years after the movie’s release, it’s currently sitting at the Top 1 spot in the Most Popular Movies chart with almost 231M views and 454M hours watched. For reference, its closest competitor is Leonardo DiCaprio ’s Don’t Look Up which “only” has 171M views and 408M hours watched.

To critics’ dismay, Red Notice is not going anywhere. It might not have been an Oscar-winning masterpiece, but it promised a star-studded action-packed adventure film with great banter, and that’s exactly what it delivered — and viewers loved it.
