Zack Snyder to Shoot Long-Delayed 'The Last Photograph' — A Passion Project That Predates His Superhero Era

A long-delayed passion project now stepping into reality.
Following the buzz (and backlash) around Rebel Moon, attention naturally turns to Zack Snyder’s next move. And it turns out to be The Last Photograph, a film he has been chasing since 2011.
Production begins this month in Colombia with Rebel Moon alums Stuart Martin and Fra Fee in the lead. Once linked to Christian Bale and Sean Penn, the project now reemerges in leaner form — smaller, more personal, and notably not backed by Netflix.
From Long Shelf Life to Real Life
The script by Kurt Johnstad (300) follows an ex-DEA agent rescuing his kidnapped niece and nephew in the South American mountains, aided by a weary war photographer.
Snyder calls it "a meditation on life and death," shaped by his own experiences. Curious, isn’t it, to see the king of spectacle shift into something this stripped back?
Smaller, But Hardly Modest
Snyder says he wanted "a movie without visual effects for five minutes." Yet with Hans Zimmer scoring and a kidnapping thriller at its core, The Last Photograph is hardly modest.
What makes it fascinating is the absence of Netflix — after Rebel Moon, the break feels telling. Could this be Snyder’s most honest film yet, or just a stylish pause before the next epic?
