The 2014 historical film suddenly found a way to make it up to its director’s biggest recent flops.

Nobody really saw it coming, but Zack Snyder’s film is once again holding a place in Netflix ’s US top, and it’s neither of his Rebel Moon flops.

Snyder’s 300: Rise of an Empire is suddenly one of the most-watched movies on the platform this week and, according to data provided by FlixPatrol, the flick has climbed to the number two position surpassed only by Netflix’s new surprising arrival Godzilla Minus One.

Released in 2014 as a sequel of sorts to 300, Snyder’s 2006 historical movie, 300: Rise of an Empire follows Greek general Themistocles of Athens, portrayed by Sullivan Stapleton, who, alongside his army, is set to strike back against the invasion of Persian forces.

The already ruthless approaching battle gets even more complicated when the Persian army finds support from the God-King Xerxes of Persia and the leader of the Persian navy Artemisia.

Apart from Stapleton, the movie features some other A-list stars like Eva Green, Lena Headey and Gerard Butler.

Upon its release back in the day, the movie got very controversial results when it finally hit theaters. 300: Rise of an Empire became a huge box office success, grossing around $337 million against the initial budget of $110 million, but critics didn’t really share that enthusiasm and many viewers apparently joined them in this opinion.

To-date, the film holds average scores of 45% and 51% from critics and the audience respectively on Rotten Tomatoes. Back in the day many noted that the flick definitely had an upside of Eva Green’s powerful appearance, though the sequel was still nothing compared to its 2006 predecessor.

Despite all the criticism, Zack Snyder’s historical drama seems to be doing much better than his brand new movies anyway. Given that 300: Rise of an Empire out of the blue received a second life from Netflix viewers, it still appears to be relatively successful compared to Snyder’s Rebel Moon films that, upon their release, were completely crushed by everyone who ever got to watch them.
