Expect controversial imagery, thoughtful storytelling, and enough questions to leave you craving answers.

A few years ago, AMC's The Terror unexpectedly emerged as one of the best horror series on television – viewers were shocked by the British sailors' encounter with Arctic horror.

The second chapter received less acclaim, but after a long hiatus, the anthology series has finally returned. The third season of The Terror is subtitled Devil in Silver, and it's brilliant once again.

What Is 'The Terror' Season 3 About?

New York, 21st century. Pepper works as a laborer to support his girlfriend, Marisol, and their daughter. He dreams of being a musician and is saving up for a drum kit. However, his plans are ruined when he gets into a fight with her ex-husband.

The police decide not to bother with the paperwork and commit him to a psychiatric hospital for 72 hours. Three days stretch into weeks. Pepper realizes that escaping the semi-abandoned New Hyde Hospital won't be easy.

Fear rages within the institution's walls – patients and staff alike are afraid of the door in the back wing. They say the spirit of the cruel founder still haunts the hospital, practicing punitive psychiatric methods.

'The Terror' Season 3 Is More Than Just a Standard Horror Show About a Mental Hospital

The opening is reminiscent of a classic hospital horror. We've encountered this set of clichés before: a seemingly healthy protagonist, unfortunate circumstances, and suspicious doctors behind closed doors. However, the creators go another way.

These motifs serve as the foundation for a composite image of a psychiatric hospital. The main source of fear here isn't supernatural forces but the societal problems they reflect.

This brings Devil in Silver closer to paranoid horror stories, in which the monster may be absent from the frame. The creators take it a step further – the hospital's dim lighting doesn't conceal a monster, it conceals the system behind it.

From the very first episodes, it's clear that the dramatic component is superior to the horror one. The intimacy of the hospital could have limited the narrative, but the screenwriters establish a solid dramatic framework.

They're not rushing to reveal all their cards, but they're pointing out important details: Pepper's anger issues, his relationship with his son, and the ambiguous behavior of the staff.

'The Terror' Season 3 Is off to a Strong Start, Matching the High Bar Set by Season 1

For the first time in three seasons, The Terror addresses modern issues and tests the validity of its approach in a confined space. Will it convincingly explore social topics while avoiding monotony? Only time will tell, but the first few episodes deliver on the main objective.

Karyn Kusama's masterful direction creates an atmosphere of unbearable tension, and Dan Stevens shines as Pepper. His character walks the line between anger and despair, between the desire to break free and resignation to the inevitable.

If you enjoy intelligent, slow-paced psychological horror series, don't miss Season 3 of The Terror.
