The Last of Us’ latest episode set up a revenge path for Bella Ramsey’s Ellie, but not everything might be just like some fans expect — here’s why.

The Last of Us ’ new sophomore season is getting down a pretty obscure path now that Pedro Pascal ’s Joel is gone (not in the flashbacks though), with the future five episodes centring solely on Ellie’s revenge towards Abby.

The show itself has so far been pretty faithful to the original video game of the same name, and it’s very likely that the final outcome of the characters’ crossing paths will not be much different from what the game shows.

However, even with some of the TV series’ fans convinced about Abby’s gruesome ending sometime in future episodes, The Last of Us might soon prove them wrong — so you better know how things turn out in the original game.

Warning, heavy spoilers for the game are ahead!

Ellie’s Hunt After Abby After Joel’s Death, Explained

Just like the series shows, Abby and her group leave right after the former brutally beats Joel to death, also forcing Ellie to watch him die in pain without any way to help him.

Back in Jackson, Ellie and Dina set out on a three-day journey to Seattle where, as they learnt, Abby might be hiding; also having figured that the latter would probably be at an aquarium, Ellie doesn’t hesitate to go there.

However, the only ones she discovers in the aquarium are Abby’s pals Owen and Mel who Ellie immediately kills.

Later, just when Tommy and Jesse, who previously joined Ellie, try to convince her to get back home, Abby shows up, shooting Jesse and injuring Tommy, later also starting up a fight with Ellie.

This time, they somehow manage to go their separate ways, but soon Ellie decides to kill Abby for sure and makes a second attempt to track her down — however, she still doesn’t kill her in the end.

Why Does Ellie Let Abby Go?

Ellie and Abby’s last encounter happens in California where Abby and her companion Lev are kidnapped by the Rattlers.

After saving both from the most certain death in the hands of the militaristic gang, Ellie feels like it’s time to end with Abby once and for all and almost drowns her in the sea when she realises Abby’s death won’t change anything and won’t bring Joel back.

Eventually, Ellie leaves Abby alone and both make it to the end of the game, proving that breaking the circle of violence was still a better option rather than killing each other.

When Is The Last of Us Next Episode Being Released?

The second season’s episode 3 will be dropped on Max on April 20. The remaining four episodes will also arrive every Sunday until May 25.
