Dutton Ranch's season 2 showrunner Benjamin Cavell comes straight from Justified — and Taylor Sheridan's involvement is changing too

Paramount has hired a new foreman.

Benjamin Cavell — six seasons on Justified, creator of SEAL Team, co-creator of The Stand, developer of The Institute — is running season 2 of Dutton Ranch. If you've been waiting your whole adult life for the Raylan Givens sensibility to wander onto a Sheridan set, congratulations: your weird, specific prayer was heard.

He replaces Chad Feehan, who created the series and then left it in June, before the show had even premiered. Reports at the time pointed to clashes with the principal cast and not much backing from Taylor Sheridan. Nobody involved is saying much more than that on the record, which is its own kind of answer.

The résumé, in case you need convincing

• Wrote on all six seasons of Justified, ended the run as an executive producer, and has his name on the series finale, "The Promise" — an episode people still cite when they want to explain what a good ending looks like.
• Created SEAL Team for CBS and Paramount+, which ran seven seasons.
• Co-created The Stand and developed The Institute, both Stephen King.
• Also did time on Homeland, Sneaky Pete, and Godfather of Harlem.

That is a man who has run a lot of rooms. Dutton Ranch just spent a season being the biggest original series launch in Paramount+ history with no one steadily at the wheel. So.

What the cast is saying (and not saying)

Cole Hauser gave The Hollywood Reporter the most Rip Wheeler possible quote on the subject: "Showrunners change all the time." He added that the business is about adapting and that people move on. Kelly Reilly was warmer about Feehan personally — she said they finished the season together and called it difficult but satisfying to make.

Reading between those lines requires no reading at all. Something wasn't working. Now there's someone new. Moving on.

Cavell was announced days before the season 1 finale, "El Padrino," which left Beth and Rip dumping bodies and squared off against a cartel boss with ties to the rival ranch. The show pulled an 89% on Rotten Tomatoes across the season — better than the first year of Yellowstone ever managed — so this is a course correction on a hit, not a rescue mission.

The Sheridan part

Here's the detail that matters more than the showrunner news, honestly. Taylor Sheridan barely touched season 1. He was an executive producer, the characters were his, and that was roughly it — a stark change for a franchise where he famously wrote every episode of the flagship himself.

Reilly said as much in that same THR interview: "I was very uncertain of what this would be without his words." She wasn't sure the show would work. She wasn't sure Beth would work without him.

And now, per Reilly, he's coming back in a more hands-on way for season 2. Nobody has defined "hands-on." Given that Sheridan is simultaneously running Landman, Lioness, and The Madison and writing every word of all three, "hands-on" might mean "reads the outlines." It might mean more. Even a little Sheridan in the room changes the temperature of a Sheridan show.

One writer from Justified plus one Taylor Sheridan paying attention is more creative infrastructure than season 1 had at any point.

What it means for Beth and Rip

Cavell's first job, as Variety put it, is steadying the ship. The show already knows what it is — two people trying to build something in South Texas while the world keeps sending them enemies. What it needs is a voice, and Justified is one of the few shows in the genre that never lost its voice, even for an episode.

Ed Harris said earlier this year that he felt "misled" about his role. Feehan is gone. Sheridan's back in the room. The new guy has written some of the best Westerns ever put on television.

I'm not saying season 2 will be better. I'm saying the ingredients list improved dramatically.
