The biggest HBO mystery of all time.

Summary:

  • Westworld was an HBO dystopian western drama that aired from 2016 to 2022.
  • The show was canceled before the release of its final season 5, due to the sharp decline in viewership for season 4.
  • The star of the show, Evan Rachel Wood, states that she still doesn't know how the story would have ended.

Created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy in 2016, HBO's dystopian sci-fi western hit Westworld quickly won the hearts of many viewers. Thanks to its original concept, the show stood out from the rest of the network's dramas, making it completely unique and impossible to look away from.

While the show was scheduled to end after season 5, its abrupt cancellation in 2022, after only four seasons, caused a huge backlash. But as much as fans have tried to get HBO to reconsider its decision, or push Westworld to find another home, to this day it remains officially off the air.

Of course, with an entire season's worth of storylines left untold, Westworld viewers were left with many questions about its potential finale.

However, it turns out that the show's cast members are just as much in the dark as everyone else. Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy may be the only ones with the answers.

Will There Be Westworld Season 5?

First introduced as a rancher's daughter, Evan Rachel Wood's Dolores Abernathy turned out to be the longest-running, first host of the American Old West theme park Westworld. She was established as the show's main character and remained with Westworld throughout seasons 1 through 4.

Considering how Dolores' arc developed in season 4, the fact that there was no finale didn't sit well with one actress, either.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about Westworld's unfortunate cancellation, Wood pointed out that she doesn't even know what was supposed to happen at the end.

“I asked the creators after we got canceled, 'Can you please just tell me how you're going to end?' And they wouldn't tell me. I think because, I don't know, maybe somehow, someway, in some iteration we'll get to finish it, but I still don’t know,” the actress said.

While it's fun to play around with, we wouldn't advise Westworld fans to hold onto it as a promise of the finale.

Of course, beyond Season 5, there are several ways to tell the story's finale, from making it into a movie to releasing it as a graphic novel, but there is no official confirmation that either is in the works right now.

However, if you've already come to terms with the fact that Westworld's finale may remain a total mystery forever, and just want to dive deep into the show's universe once again, you may be in for another disappointment.

Since the show has been canceled on HBO, it has also been removed from streaming on Max. The best way to watch Westworld now is to buy or rent it on Amazon Prime.
