Forget Stephen King, This 96%-Rated Apple TV Show Is the Creepiest Small-Town Nightmare of 2026
If you're a fan of mystic horror, you just can't miss this one.
Widow's Bay was one of the most highly anticipated series of the spring thanks to its intriguing premise, unique genre blend, and talented team of creators.
Those expectations were fully met – the show, starring Matthew Rhys, became one of the biggest thriller hits of the season, and here's why.
What Is 'Widow's Bay' About?

Widow's Bay is a small town located on an island of the same name. Mayor Tom Loftis strives to transform the village into a paradise for tourists, but the locals fiercely resist because they believe the island is cursed.
At the mayor's invitation, a writer from The New York Times visits Widow's Bay and is delighted by the island. However, when hundreds of tourists finally arrive, the mayor encounters a mysterious thick fog, ghosts in a hotel, and a monster from the deep.
The mayor must quickly unravel the town's history and the possible curse.
'Widow's Bay' Strikes the Perfect Balance Between Horror and Absurdity
In Widow's Bay, the creators have found a rare formula in which mystical horror and absurdist comedy exist in equal measure.
The show weaves together several paranormal plots. Rational people tend to view tales of ghosts and witches with distrust and often with a smile. In the first episodes, the creators give viewers the freedom to either believe in the mysticism or wait for all the myths to be debunked.
The project could easily be an anthology of Stephen King's short fiction – most of his works are set in perpetually foggy, unfriendly New England.
In each episode, Tom investigates a new local legend: he spends the night in a haunted hotel, dives into a sea inhabited by bloodthirsty creatures, and encounters an elderly mermaid.
Thanks to its disparate stories, the series balances between genres – supernatural horror, slasher, and even a frighteningly realistic historical drama about pioneers in the spirit of Robert Eggers' The Witch.
'Widow's Bay' Is a Real TV Gem You Must Watch

The series slows down in the second half, but as the main plot unfolds, the creators introduce a couple of entertaining side quests. Widow's Bay masterfully scares and simultaneously mocks all our irrational fears.
In a sea of monotonous content, Widow's Bay is a quirky island with its own fog, monsters, silly townspeople, and a mayor trying to maintain his sanity as everything around him crumbles.
