Netflix’s hit mystery crime movie series is coming to its end after the third movie — or maybe not? Here’s what plans Knives Out’s Rian Johnson keeps for the franchise.

Things might not be ending that soon for the Knives Out movie franchise just yet as director Rian Johnson might be envisioning more instalment for the Daniel Craig-led hit film series.

Launched back in 2019 with the movie of the same name, the series has been planned as a three-movie deal all along, with the upcoming third instalment titled Knives Out: Wake Up Dead Man potentially wrapping the franchise up.

Many rumours about Netflix’s attempts to keep the series alive for some time have circulated in the media since then, though now Johnson has a definite answer. It doesn’t mean we’re getting another movie though.

Rian Johnson Says He “Would Keep Doing” ‘Knives Out’ Movies If There’s a Good Idea

Even though Netflix would likely greenlight more movies for Knives Out in a heartbeat, Rian Johnson doesn’t let the franchise’s success blindside him, sticking to the idea that he’d wait for as long as it takes for a good idea to arrive to make another movie.

“And with the movies, we can keep doing that. I don’t have something in my head right now. You kind of burn the ship into the sea each time and ask yourself, ‘How will I make anything ever again?’ But I would keep doing them as long as I can”, the director revealed during a conversation with Rolling Stone during a recently published Q&A.

Rian Johnson Teases Edgar Allan Poe-Themed ‘Wake Up Dead Man’

While the movie is yet to arrive on Netflix in December, the Knives Out franchise’s fans have long speculated about the future film’s darker tones and themes that hint at some sort of religious storyline.

Despite Johnson not confirming anything about the story itself yet, he did reveal that Wake Up Dead Man will be much more obscure and just nothing like the two previous installments.

“It’s incredibly different from Glass Onion. We put out a teaser trailer a month ago. It’s much more a Gothic, much more grounded tone. It’s more similar to the first one in that way. It kind of gets back to the real origins of the genre, which, predating [Agatha] Christie, go back to [Edgar Allan] Poe”, Johnson teased, adding that the decision comes from his own desire to not be repetitive in his own movies.

When Will ‘Wake Up Dead Man’ Be Released?

The movie will become available for streaming on Netflix on December 12.
