It's one of those series that people say is underrated or unfairly overlooked – and they're right.

In 2019, Hulu released Ramy, an autobiographical dramedy series created by stand-up comedian Ramy Youssef. It tells about a young American Muslim who is torn between his pious Egyptian community and the millennial generation.

It's a comedy where the jokes aren't rapid-fire, and the occasional dramatic moments add depth without being overly emotional.

What Is 'Ramy' About?

Ramy lives in New Jersey with his parents, who fled Egypt for the US in search of a better life for their children, and his sister, who, despite being an adult, is not allowed to live life to the fullest.

After his latest business venture fails, Ramy finds himself unemployed and reluctantly accepts a part-time job with his uncle, a diamond dealer on New York City's prestigious Diamond Row.

Ramy is a first-generation American Muslim. Born and raised in the US, he is now torn between tradition, faith, and family control. On the one hand, he faces the modern world with its freedoms and temptations, on the other hand, he is faced with traditions, faith, and family control.

'Ramy' Explores Generational Conflict and Identity in a Poignant & Thought-Provoking Way

If Youssef had kept the main character in focus throughout the series, it would have been a solid comedy. However, in the second half of the season, he shifts the focus to other members of Ramy's family, elevating the show to a level that is, if not great, then certainly relevant to our time.

In episodes dedicated to his mother and sister, the creators show how the people around the main character live and further dissect stereotypes about the Muslim community.

Ramy tries to find his way, but constantly stumbles. He wants to be a good Muslim, yet he's unwilling to give up dating, alcohol, and sex. He wants to respect his parents, but their demands seem unreasonable. He wants to find himself but has no idea where to start.

'Ramy' Is a Unique TV Project – and It Definitely Deserves Your Attention

Tired of housework and constant loneliness, Ramy's mother begins driving for Uber but faces the alienation of modern Americans. Ramy's sister struggles to escape her parents' surveillance, which is rooted in gender bias in Islam.

Youssef doesn't try to appeal to a mass audience, nor does he limit his potential audience to introspective Muslims. Ramy is an honest, funny, and touching portrait of a generation caught between two worlds.

It continues the tradition of Louis C.K. and Aziz Ansari but offers a unique voice and perspective rarely seen on television.

What Did Critics & Viewers Think of 'Ramy'?

  • Ramy has 95% from critics and 84% from viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

  • On IMDb, the series has a score of 8.0/10.

Where to Watch 'Ramy'?

Ramy is available to steam on Hulu.
