The one you wouldn’t suspect at all.

Summary:

  • Supernatural was The CW's mystical horror TV series that aired for 15 seasons from 2005 to 2020.
  • The show followed it's two main characters, Dean and Sam Winchesters, as they fought demonic forces across the country.
  • Many viewers believe that of all the antagonists the show has had, the soulless version of Sam Winchester remains one of the scariest.

If you love horror and action and find them to be the most entertaining genres on television, you've probably heard of Supernatural. While the show has lost its darkness over the years and leaned more into the supernatural mystery part of it, there are still some pretty heavy episodes and antagonists.

The story follows two brothers, Dean and Sam Winchesters, on their journey to fight demons and all the other supernatural activity that is being reported. They travel all over the country, facing various forms of creatures, from the least frightening to the most powerful, often disguised as other people.

However, many fans agree that one of the scariest antagonists the show has ever portrayed was not someone they expected.

This character managed to make Lucifer himself look grim by comparison. That was Sam Winchester himself, back in season 6, when he lost his soul.

After Sam's heroic self-sacrifice at the end of season 5, many believed he would be trapped in the Cage forever.

However, he was almost immediately released and returned to Earth, leaving viewers confused. As much as everyone was happy to get Sam back with no apparent damage, it was very suspicious.

With every word Sam said or move he made, the suspense only grew. If anything, he wasn't the same character the fans had come to love and care about. He was completely different, and the change that happened did not seem to be gradual, but immediate, as if a switch had been turned off inside of him.

Once sensitive and caring, his demeanor changed completely. He didn't seem to care about anyone, using the people around him as a source of help, pleasure, or entertainment. His relationship with almost everyone took a turn for the worse, and his methods of killing became far more gruesome.

As was later revealed, even though Sam's body was out of the cage, his soul was still there, enduring the tortures.

While the soulless Sam wasn't nearly as powerful as some of the adversaries the brothers would face in the future, the sudden change in him had a huge impact on many fans.

Seeing it happen to someone who was truly good and caring was far more frightening than the cruelty of someone who'd been that way all along.

Not only that, but Sam's actions, while horrible, remained human. And as we all know by now, even in supernatural shows, there aren't many monsters scarier than people with cruel motives.
