Teacher. Astronaut. Last Chance: Gosling Faces Extinction-Level Mission in 'Project Hail Mary' Trailer

First film from Lord & Miller since 22 Jump Street.
Ryan Gosling finds himself very far from the classroom — and even farther from Earth — in the newly released trailer for Project Hail Mary, the upcoming sci-fi adventure from Amazon MGM Studios. Based on Andy Weir’s bestselling 2021 novel (yes, the same Andy Weir who brought us The Martian), the film follows Gosling as Ryland Grace, a mild-mannered schoolteacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. The twist? He’s humanity’s last hope for survival.
The trailer hints at both cosmic danger and unexpected warmth, as Grace slowly realises he must save Earth — and possibly another planet. He’s not alone: a mysterious alien soon joins the mission. "The sun is not the only star dying," warns Sandra Hüller’s character. Gosling’s deadpan reply — "My place is in the classroom" — brings a touch of humour to the end-of-the-world tone. Can one bewildered teacher really save two species?
This marks Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s first film as directors since 22 Jump Street (2014). Known for sharp humour and genre flair, the duo now aim for something more emotional. As Gosling joked at CinemaCon, they’re "only happy if they make you do the rare and coveted laugh-cry." This one just might.
Project Hail Mary hits cinemas on 20 March 2026, so there’s still time to read the book — though judging by this first trailer, the film version might be all the propulsion you need.
