Could it beat the original?

Summary:

  • The Gentlemen is Guy Rithie's 2019 crime drama starring Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam and Colin Farrell.
  • The series of the same name, premiering March 7 on Netflix, expands on that universe.
  • Starring Theo James, it will be Guy Ritchie 's first serious foray into television series.

The best movies are either those that feel perfectly wrapped up at the end, leaving the viewer with a sense of satisfaction for how every single aspect of it worked out, or those that leave the audience wanting more, the sooner the better.

The fever that swept the Internet after Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen clearly indicated that this blockbuster fell into the second category. Unfortunately, a direct sequel would have been impossible, no matter how much we all want to see the actors' chemistry on the big screen again.

However, there is a second best. The Gentlemen-inspired Netflix TV show that will bring us back to the weed empire. Even better, the show is completely created by Guy Ritchie himself, so you can be sure to get the story with the exact same vibe, but slightly different perspective.

What Is Better: The Gentlemen Movie or TV Show?

Although there is no sequel to the iconic movie, there is a TV show that will continue its legacy with the same upbeat mood that you were hoping to get. Humorous and action-packed as always, The Gentlemen the series (not to be confused with the movie) will follow the story of Eddie Halstead, who returns to his inherited home to find a weed empire.

The show will be starring Theo James, who you may know as scheming investor Cameron Sullivan from the second season of HBO's hit The White Lotus, or Sandition's romantic lead Sidney Parker. Aside from The White Lotus, the actor's TV projects haven't been all that successful, but his talent has shone through in each and every one.

Joining James in the cast are the rebellious star of Skins, Kaya Scodelario, and Daniel Ings of The Marvels. Guy Ritchie is credited as the show's creator, writer, director and producer, making The Gentlemen the director's first full foray into television production.

So far, the show promises to be just as exciting as the movie. Even the Rotten Tomatoes ratings show little difference between the movie and the show in terms of quality. The 2019 movie has a 75% rating, while the 2024 TV show is catching up with a 73% rating. The only real way to find out which turned out better is giving them both a try.
