We mean the character.

Summary:

  • The first season of The Sandman turned out to be a great adaptation of Neil Gaiman 's original novel
  • One of the Eternal siblings, Death, portrayed by Kirby Howell-Baptiste, ended up being a fan favorite
  • Season 2 is currently filming, and Howell-Baptise confirms that Death will remain a crucial part of the story

It is a great time to be a fan of all things Neil Gaiman — aside from Good Omens, the author's fans have received a phenomenally good adaptation of The Sandman, another of Gaiman's iconic works.

After making waves on Netflix and even receiving a rare physical release, The Sandman still took its time to get greenlit for a Season 2. When it did, the Hollywood strikes were happening, so it was an emotional rollercoaster for fans.

Luckily, The Sandman crew is here to bring some good news: Specifically, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, who portrayed Death in the series, recently confirmed that her character will be around for more family dynamics between her and Morpheus.

The actress confirmed that Death will appear in "more episodes," and also teased that series author and executive producer Neil Gaiman has taken fan feedback into account.

"It feels like the show is a two-way street, it's not just us putting something out, it's Neil listening, responding to the fans, and then in turn giving them the things that they are asking for, yelling for, begging for," Howell-Baptiste told Collider.

Which The Sandman Season 1 Episode Was Death In?

Although Death is considered a fan favorite in the Sandman fandom, she only appeared in one episode of the first season - episode 6, titled The Sound of Her Wings.

However, it was more than enough for critics and viewers to call it one of the best episodes of the entire season. The only thing fans seemed to regret was that Death seemed to be more empathetic and kind in the show than in the original comics.

"Seriously though, all the portrayals of the Endless so far are amazing. Dream is the arrogant, proud, stick-thin moron we all know and love; Death is truly, amazingly kind (and I’m just a little sad that she doesn’t go completely off at Dream like in the comics); and the ten seconds of Desire that we have so far are very very exciting," one fan noted on Reddit.

Well, given that Gaiman is teased to be "listening," season 2 may provide us with a more book-accurate Death. After all, a tough time is clearly coming for the Endless family. Watch out for spoilers ahead!

Desire has made it clear that they have no intention of stopping dragging Dream, promising to draw blood next time. It's plausible that the Endless family could be thrown into even more chaos, with Desire and Despair teaming up against their siblings.

Howell-Baptiste mentioned that the "complexities" and family dynamics will be expanded in "this continuation of episodes," so if you thought the emotional rollercoaster was over, think again.

After all, Season 2 will welcome a new Endless sibling, Delirium, portrayed by an as-yet-unannounced actor.

When Will The Sandman Season 2 Release?

Filming for the second season is still underway, and Howell-Baptiste was unable to provide any clarity on when it will end. According to her, she "never finishes filming. Does that mean we can expect more than one episode of Death content?

While you (and we) wait, you can binge the first season of The Sandman on Netflix.
