Mary & George follows the titular character on her journey to gain the wealth and recognition of the aristocracy through King James I. Coming from a humble background, Countess of Buckingham Mary Villers is tired of feeling powerless in her own life, so she decides to conquer the world by ultimately selling her son to the king.

Based on historical figures and real events that took place in England at the end of the 16th century, the show is not afraid to tell the truth, however ugly it may be. This shocking factor that comes into play during the various scenes keeps the viewers on the edge of their seats throughout all 7 episodes of the show until the finale.

Although the show claims to be based on fact, you may want to take everything you see on screen with a pinch of salt. While the show has received generally positive reviews, some historians have complained that the writing exaggerates certain parts of history and changes others to better fit the narrative.
