Who Really Killed Paul in ‘Your Friends and Neighbors’? Season 1 Finale Twist, Explained

All the allegations against Jon Hamm’s Coop were proved to be wrong in Your Friends and Neighbours’ season 1 ending; however, Paul’s real murderer also turned out to be a surprising plot twist. Here’s what happened in the show’s season 1 finale.
It was a pretty happy ending for Jon Hamm’s financier-turned-thief Coop whose last-minute discovery saved him from decades in prison.
Your Friends and Neighbours’ previous episodes saw Coop being framed for killing Paul, the ex-husband of Coop’s on-and-off lover Sam.
Even though the viewers got the evidence of the character having nothing to do with the possible murder (though still being the first one to discover Paul’s body), the first season’s remaining episodes were tough on Coop, almost guaranteeing him at least a couple of years behind the bars.
However, Coop’s innocence was then confirmed by an even more shocking plot twist which involved Paul’s ex-wife Sam — but, honestly, not that much.
Who Killed Paul in ‘Your Friends and Neighbours’ Season 1?
As Coop and Elena figured while searching for evidence in Sam’s house, Paul committed a suicide and left his wife a note which she hid and Elena found in one of the drawers later.
When Coop confronts Sam for trying to frame him for Paul’s murder, she explains that she had no other choice since Paul’s suicide looking like an actual suicide would deprive her and her kids of the millions-worthy insurance policy.
She also revealed that Paul had committed suicide while calling her on FaceTime, so she rushed back home from Boston and shot his already dead body twice to make it look like a murder.
Eventually, Coop gets free of all allegations and Sam is arrested, though it’s also hinted that she might not go to jail since she never filed an insurance claim after all.
What to Expect from ‘Your Friends and Neighbours’ Season 2?
In the first season’s finale, it might seem like Coop did get everything he wanted when he reconciled with his family and got his job back, but the last episode’s final scene suggests he’s not done with robberies just yet.
The sequence follows right after Coop accepts his former boss Jack’s job offer, but never gets on the latter’s private jet to meet with a client and instead opts for robbing Jack’s empty house, also noting that it might be his time to get back to work.
Though it’s not yet clear whether Coop would return to his real work after all, it’s safe to say he will be visiting his friends and neighbours’ mansions at night in the meantime.
When Will ‘Your Friends and Neighbours’ Season 2 Be Released?
The show’s next instalment is now expected to arrive on Apple TV+ sometime in the spring of 2026.
