We wouldn't want Zack Snyder's creative freedom to be restrained by Disney, too.

While Rebel Moon had initially started off as a Star Wars spinoff, it quickly evolved into something way more original and separated from the Lucasfilm universe — not least due to the movie's producers best efforts for it to be that way.

Deborah Snyder, who is not only Zack's wife but also the movie's producer, certainly knew that Rebel Moon would do no good as just another Star Wars offshoot. So when Rebel Moon became its own thing, she couldn't be happier.

“Once, it was a Star Wars film, and I never wanted it to be. I remember, I said to Zack, ‘I just feel like your hands are going to be tied so much in what that IP is,’ even though it kind of lived outside of it. So I was kind of happy when that fell apart, because I always felt like it was better," Snyder explained at Gamescon.

After learning a lot with superheroes and zombies, the Snyder duo felt like the fantasy space world was just perfect for exploration on their own, without restrictions that would inevitably come with being a part of the Star Wars universe.

Still, Rebel Moon remains heavily inspired not only by the iconic franchise, but also by the works of Akira Kurosawa. Snyder had first pitch the idea shortly after Lucasfilm was purchased by Disney, but some time later, the project was redeveloped into a completely original project by Snyder and producer Eric Newman.

Rebel Moon will be split into two parts, titled A Child of Fire and The Scargiver respectively. Both chapters will be rated PG-13, but Snyder promised that an extended, R-rated cut can also be expected.

So expect Snyder's bold space endeavour on Netflix, starting December 22. For Star Wars fans who are saddened by the fact that Snyder's Star Wars project didn't work out, try checking out Ahsoka, with its first two episodes currently available for streaming on Disney Plus.
