6 Hunger Games Characters Who Need Their Own Spinoff After Sunrise on the Reaping

The Hunger Games’ universe is being expanded by yet another prequel, this time focusing on Haymitch Abernathy’s victory, though Suzanne Collins’ book series still might need a couple of more installments. Here are some of the Hunger Games tributes whose background stories the franchise’s fans are dying to know more about.
Years after the original movie series wrapped up, The Hunger Games franchise is still alive, now making the first preparations for its next prequel’s arrival, this time going back to the time when Woody Harrelson’s Haymitch Abernathy won the 50th Hunger Games and ignited another rebellion against the Capitol.
The movie, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, will see the return of several familiar characters like Plutarch Heavensbee, now portrayed by Jesse Plemons, and President Snow, though the actor for the role is yet to be announced.
Still, it’s not a secret to the fans of the original story that Panem’s history with the Hunger Games goes way beyond, introducing many more compelling characters who got to be everyone’s favorites back in the day.
Here’s our list of the most intriguing Hunger Games tributes the movie franchise hasn’t told about yet — it should though.
Finnick Odair
Sam Claflin’s character didn’t waste much time in Catching Fire, coming as the most charming tribute whose death broke everyone’s hearts once and for all.
However, Finnick isn’t just about the handsome appearance and kind nature: having become the youngest Hunger Games tribute to win at the age of 14, he has been tortured by the Capitol for years before ending up at the third Quarter Quell with Katniss and Peeta.
Just like everyone else who rioted against the government, Finnick had a personal issue with President Snow who he wanted to fall as harshly as possible.
Despite not being alive at the moment, Finnick’s dream eventually comes true with the Second Rebellion led by Katniss.
Johanna Mason
Another Quarter Quell tribute who got everyone’s attention for her constant clashes with Katniss and bold attitude, Johanna made an impression on the Capitol’s audience even before that.
Chosen to represent District 7 at the 71st Hunger Games, Johanna caused a mess when she imitated a breakdown after the reaping, later proving it to be fake when she massacred all the other tributes thanks to her shockingly good fighting skills.
Just like Haymitch, Johanna also seemed to be a big problem for President Snow, which led to the latter deciding to kill everyone she ever loved.
Considering her unpredictable nature, Johanna’s prequel would be an exciting addition to the franchise, explaining how exactly she caused yet another burst of anger in the Capitol.
Plutarch Heavensbee
Suzanne Collins’ Sunrise on the Reaping gives a major update to Plutarch’s life story, making it clear that, even after becoming the Head Gamemaker, he was carefully planning to overthrow the Capitol and President Snow.
On top of that, Plutarch was also the one who encouraged Haymitch to blow up the water tank hidden in the arena, which could potentially pave the way for another rebellion.
One of few rioters who worked inside the Capitol, Plutarch is one of the most deserving characters when it comes to another prequel story which could recount his attempts to secure allies from the outside while not exposing his real intentions.
Beetee Latier
Beetee’s first appearance in Catching Fire made him one of the most compelling characters in the whole franchise years ago, but Sunrise on the Reaping adds an even more tragic tone to his story, revealing that Beetee’s victory in the Hunger Games isn’t his only connection to the deadly competition.
The character’s plot line is driven by his exceptional knowledge of technologies, which makes Beetee another great option for a prequel exploring the events that led to his own triumph at the games.
Effie Trinket
Sunrise on the Reaping adds some intriguing hints at the past life of the eccentric character known as the District 12 escort during the 74th Hunger Games.
The original book series doesn’t say much about Effie whatsoever, but the latest prequel reveals she’s been connected to Haymitch Abernathy for way longer than everyone expected.
Additionally, it also suggests that Effie was coming from a wealthy family which for some reason went into the Capitol’s disgrace.
The character’s path from the Hunger Games invited stylist to the district escort, as well as her family’s tragic story, could become another long-awaited expansion of the franchise.
Alma Coin
Initially believed to be a rightful leader of the long-lost District 13, Alma Coin turned out to be a female version of President Snow, which is why she’s brutally killed by Katniss when the latter realises Panem can’t afford another dictator.
A prequel story about Alma Coin could likely have the same success as The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes had it decided to delve into the character’s gradual pass from a hero to a villain, drawing parallels with President Snow’s downfall.
