The actor isn’t kidding either.
The Oscar race this year is as controversial as it could ever be, with a bunch of movies being unfairly snubbed and others getting more of those nominations than they probably deserved.
It’s not only the case for Emilia Pérez, the movie that is still being slammed for inaccuracy and a whopping amount of 13 Oscar nominations, or Margaret Qualley, whose phenomenal performance in The Substance was brutally ignored by critics, but also for Denzel Washington who was predicted to get that nomination for Best Supporting Actor in Ridley Scott ’s epic sequel to Gladiator.
Things changed radically since, but Washington himself does seem to be taking it all easier than his devoted fans, for whom he just shared a short and pretty goofy consolation.
Denzel Washington Is Too Busy to Care About His Oscar Snub
Though he surely was one of the frontrunners in Oscars ’ early predictions, the actor eventually never made it to getting a nomination, and he seems to be fine with it.
In an interview with The New York Times, when asked about how he was feeling about being snubbed by the Oscars, Washington shared a different perspective on the issue.
“I was sitting there smiling, going: Look at you. On the day you didn’t get a nomination for an Oscar, you’re working on Othello on Broadway” and then adding jokingly “Are you kidding me? Awww. Oh, I’m so upset.”
The actor continued, explaining that he has spent enough years working in the industry to be that much concerned about Oscar nominations, especially since he’s actually a 10-time nominee and double winner.
“I’ve been around too long. I’m getting wiser, working on talking less and learning to understand more — and that’s exciting”, he added, highlighting once again that not everything is about the prestigious awards after all.
Denzel Washington’s Next Project Has Nothing to Do With Cinema
Despite having caused some rumours about his potential retirement, Washington isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, though now we’re more likely to see him on stage rather than on the big screen.
The actor is currently getting ready to star in Othello on Broadway alongside Jake Gyllenhaal who he also praised, stating that “he’s nuts. I love him. He’s complicated. But he’s already got a handle on it”. Othello is set to open to the public on March 23 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
