Even after more than 20 years, the cancellation of Firefly remains one of the most outrageous ever. Recently, Morena Baccarin commented on the possibility of a reunion, and here's what she had to say.

One of the most high-profile cancellations in TV history occurred in 2003 when Fox canceled Joss Whedon's Firefly after only one season.

The shock and rage of the fan community was immense. Using all the means available in the early 2000s, fans attacked the executives who made the controversial decision with petitions, letters, phone calls, and pickets at the studio doors.

Ultimately, a full-length finale Serenity was released, though it still causes controversy among fans.

Morena Baccarin Weighs In On a 'Firefly'/'Serenity' Reunion

'Firefly' Star Morena Baccarin Addresses the Show's Reboot:

Actress Morena Baccarin, who played Inara, was recently asked by host Michael Rosenbaum on the podcast Inside of You about the possibility of a Firefly and Serenity reunion. Baccarin answered:

“Is there going to be a Firefly reboot with all of us in it? Live action? I seriously doubt it. You know, that's a lot of different careers and different people that you have to negotiate with. [...] Part of me would be excited to revisit that world, and part of me is also a little bit like, I love it so much where it is that I'm worried about reopening that door, you know?”

'Firefly' Fans Would Better Watch a Show With New Characters

Many fans agree with the actress's opinion, though they admit they would watch a show with new characters in the same universe. Redditor Guy_Incognito97 wrote:

“I'd rather see a different story set in the same universe, with the potential for old characters to make an appearance. A re-telling of the same thing feels a bit pointless.”

Other fans doubt that a decent continuation is possible without Joss Whedon. He has been out of the film industry for several years due to accusations of workplace harassment. Reddit user NakedCardboard pointed out:

“I think a big part of what made Firefly work so well was the vision of Joss Whedon. He knew how to make ensembles work [...], and I can't imagine anyone else being able to create the same magic.”

Do We Really Need a 'Firefly' Reboot?

'Firefly' Star Morena Baccarin Addresses the Show's Reboot:

Due to a series of scandals, Joss Whedon is no longer a fixture in Hollywood, and it will definitely be extremely difficult to reunite the original Firefly cast.

Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, and Gina Torres are constantly busy with various projects; Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Jewel Staite are busy with voice acting; Morena Baccarin has a solid film career; and Ron Glass passed away in 2016.

A reboot of Firefly with a new cast might lead to catastrophic failure, even for the most diehard fans of the show.

In some ways, the story of the series is complete, thanks to the sad saga of its release and cancellation. Firefly was about how Joss Whedon fought for every line of the script and every scene, so maybe it's better for the show to remain a warm memory.
