Two episodes of Harry Potter were approved by J.K. Rowling. What role does she have in the new HBO adaptation? Here's what we know.

Recently, J.K. Rowling read the first scripts for the future HBO Harry Potter adaptation. She took to X to share her first impressions, writing:

“I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD!”

Does it mean that she's not writing for the show? Yes. J.K.Rowling is not writing for the show.

She is an executive producer but in her words also has “worked closely with the extremely talented writers.” (via X)

What Does This Mean for HBO's ‘Harry Potter’?

This positive feedback from J.K. Rowling is a pretty big deal for HBO's upcoming adaptation. While she's not writing the episodes herself, her role as executive producer means she's still keeping an eye on things.

Fun fact: HBO promised to be a faithful retelling of the original books, which probably means we'll get to see lots of fan-favorite moments that never made it to the big screen.

HBO's ‘Harry Potter’ Has Already Had Its Share of Controversies

Not everyone's thrilled about this new Harry Potter adaptation. Some fans are super excited about a fresh take on the wizarding world, while others not so much. The debate isn't just about whether HBO can do justice to the beloved story.

Two main issues: there's been plenty of push back around some casting decisions, and Rowling's past controversies have definitely added another layer to the conversation.

“Shocking comment section here, lots of people outing themselves as racist [referring to the reaction to Snape’s casting]. Insane. Looking forward to the show, the more faithful it is to the source material, the higher the chances are that it will do well,” chainarqshak on X said.

“She [J.K. Rowling] was always going to make money off this but the constant reminder of that may backfire on them. Especially since there are some factors already working against them. HBO Max is not really a family streaming service mixed with less and less of the target audience being interested in the series makes me think it may not be as groundbreaking as people think,” another fan, HauntedReader on Reddit pointed out.
