The epic saga’s second part continues a pretty disheartening trend for Kevin Costner.

Coming off Taylor Sheridan ’s Yellowstone where he starred in the lead role for 5 seasons straight, Kevin Costner moved on to his own project of passion he’s been having high hopes for, but that’s already a second time when it proves to be nothing more but wishful thinking.

Launched back in 2024 with a promising premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, Horizon: An American Saga ’s first movie was released in theatres a couple of months later, bombing in the box office and causing a significant delay in the next instalment’s arrival.

Things started getting better a bit later though, when Chapter 1 was finally dropped on streaming, but Costner’s millions-worthy franchise just got back to its discouraging start with the second movie’s release.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 Finally Premieres After 6-Month Delay

The movie received its long-awaited premiere at Santa Barbara International Film Festival on February 7, around six months after it was initially planned to be released.

The Western franchise’s second movie fell victim to its predecessor’s box office failure, but still got its own special moment as Chapter 2’s premiere gathered many Hollywood stars, including Quentin Tarantino.

Costner, who was also in attendance, shared his thoughts on why the second part of his saga holds a special place in his heart, saying that the movie will get a closer look at its female characters who have a key role in the entire story.

Unlike many might have expected, the writer-director didn’t delve into some possible issues with the third and fourth instalments since their fate now is also determined by how the second movie will play in theatres. Ironically, they might in fact follow their predecessor’s suit.

Kevin Costner’s Western Saga Continues a Disappointing Critical Trend

Despite Costner’s optimism about the second movie that, according to him, has way better chances to redeem the entire franchise’s position, Chapter 2 so far hasn’t seen much enthusiasm from critics either.

That said, the film is currently holding a score of 50% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, which is even a bit worse than Chapter 1 which back in the day secured 51% from critics and 70% from the audiences.

The second part doesn’t have any reviews from viewers yet, since the movie still hasn’t arrived in theatres and doesn’t have a specific release date, though, considering the early critical response, it’s very unlikely to have a much more successful run than Chapter 1.

Things might be different when Chapter 2 also arrives on streaming, but it will take some more time to see anyway.
