Once again, Mother Monster has delivered.

When Gaga first graced our screens as The Countess in American Horror Story: Hotel, she captured our hearts and showed everyone how to command an audience. Her portrayal of the mysterious vampire earned her a Golden Globe and established her as a great acting force.

Fast forward to August 2022, when Gaga landed the role of Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie à Deux. The news was thrilling not just for Gaga's fans, but because it meant Joaquin Phoenix would break his long-standing rule about sequels.

As director Todd Phillips revealed Toronto Sun, "Joaquin has been acting since he was eight years old, and he's never done a sequel. ... I think the only way to get Joaquin to do a sequel is for him to be nervous about it."

Nervous they made us all when they announced that Joker: Folie à Deux would be a musical – a bold creative decision that immediately sparked intense debate among fans and critics alike. The addition of musical elements to the sequel only heightened the anticipation and, yes, the nervousness of it all.

Surprisingly, Even Tarantino Enjoyed Joker: Folie à Deux

The film's release sparked all kind of reactions across the board. During “The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast”, Quentin Tarantino gave it his stamp of approval, saying:

"I really got caught up into it. I really liked the musical sequences.”

Nevertheless, the audience remained divided, which led to very mixed opinions about movies' bold artistic choice (singing it is).

Lady Gaga ’s Response to Joker: Folie à Deux Criticism

For months after the film's release, Lady Gaga remained silent about the criticism, letting the work speak for itself, which is already quite a rare approach in today's environment. Usually, creators are quick to defend their work (and, honestly, who can blame them?).

And then, Gaga finally showed us how it's done. When faced with all that criticism, she didn't go on a rant or blamed fans for "not understanding the point". Instead, she totally got it – art means different things to different people, and that's cool.

"People just sometimes do not like some things. It’s that simple, And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something did not connect in the way that you intended," she said in her Elle UK interview.

She stuck to her guns while giving a nod to everyone else's take on things.
