The following text contains spoilers for Love, Death & Robots episode "The Other Large Thing"!
What Is 'The Other Large Thing' About?
Sanchez, whose real name is Dingleberry Jones, dreams of world domination. Why? Because he's a cat. His lazy owners bought a robot assistant who cleans and cooks. They should have read the user agreement more carefully because it gives the robot complete control over their home.
When people bully the robot, it decides to serve Sanchez instead. The robot gains access to the entire electrical network and sends robots to other apartments where cats live. And Sanchez calls the robot Thumb Bringer. Sound familiar?
'The Other Large Thing' Is Another John Scalzi Story And a Prequel to 'Three Robots'
"The Other Large Thing" is another adaptation of a story by science fiction writer John Scalzi. Previously, his works formed the basis for the episodes "Three Robots," "Automated Customer Service," and "Three Robots: Exit Strategies."
Scalzi's works gradually come together, and the story of the symbiosis between cats and robots becomes clearer.
In the first-season episode "Three Robots," the cat the main characters meet reveals that, after receiving an opposable thumb through genetic engineering, cats no longer needed the human race.
Dingleberry Jones named his robot Thumb Bringer. In "Three Robots," one of the main characters said that it was humans who modified the cats' paws. However, given the robot's name, we can assume that in reality it was the robots that gave the cats opposable thumbs.
'The Other Large Thing' Is One of the Best Episodes of Volume 4
"The Other Large Thing" is one of the few Volume 4 episodes that received rave reviews from viewers. Reddit user FEAR_LORD_DUCK wrote:
“This one I REALLY liked. The second i realized the turn of events that would transpire, i was all over the concept. It ends abrupt, but some reason it's the right place to?”
It seems the creators have no choice but to continue this story in future seasons because viewers have been captivated by Dingleberry Jones and Thumb Bringer. Redditor Ceeeceeeceee commented:
“I need to know the world domination plans! Dingleberry and Thumb Bringer were too likable for such limited screen time. Sequel needed!”
"The Other Large Thing" received one of the highest ratings of Volume 4 episodes on IMDb – 7.0/10. Perhaps the creators will listen to the fans, and we will finally learn the details of humanity's downfall at the hands of robots, cats and their opposable thumbs.
