The Ted actor conquers the platform’s audience with his simple, but appealing movie.

Summary:

  • Apple TV ’s top is climbed by Mark Wahlberg’s comedy action feature.
  • It tells a story about a former assassin whose family life gets disturbed by the past, the ghosts of which force him to run with his wife and children.
  • It is criticized for the plot’s overall banality, although it’s a good example of a chill movie.

Having already proved to the whole world that he’s a great comedy actor with his roles in The Other Guys (2010), Ted (2012) and Daddy's Home (2015), Mark Wahlberg continues this career trend. The 2023 comedy, starring him, prominently took over the decent place in Apple TV’s Global Chart, second only to Joaquin Phoenix ’s Napoleon.

The story revolves around a car salesman Dan, portrayed by Wahlberg, who is initially presented as a perfect loving husband, father and a skilled handyman. However, he holds a big secret in his pocket as he is also an elite hitman in retirement.

Yeah, the plot develops just like you may now think - his past catches up to his calm family life, and he is forced to run from the town. At this moment he decides to take his unsuspecting family on a road trip, which would save them all from the pursuit.

The movie’s plot is kind of banal, as it presents another story about a former agent or killer in their confrontation with the ghosts of the past. However, here it is done with enthusiasm, well-written humor and charm of the onscreen family.

Besides, its action sequences are done with the obvious creativity, with the fight scenes being reminiscent of Keanu ReevesJohn Wick. This movie aspect is mixed with witty jokes, related to Wahlberg’s character interaction with his children and wife.

As for the family members, finding themselves in the middle of the showdown, they’re all remarkable for their comical images. The Source Code’s actress Michelle Monaghan played Dan’s wife, with Zoe Colletti and Van Crosby as their two teenage children.

AppleTV’s viewers can recognize here the synopsis of last year’s The Family Plan, which became the platform's most watched film at the time. Wahlberg here delivers presumably the most charismatic performance of the last decade, which is added by his onscreen chemistry with Monaghan.

“I enjoyed it. Yes it's dumb. Who cares. My brain needs a break at the end of the week,” as voiced in Reddit’s discussion of the movie, and it’s quite a fair conclusion for it.

It’s a straight example of the comedy action genre, so there’s no need to neglect it.
