One of HBO’s biggest hits this year, The Pitt received many accolades for its accuracy, but that also came with a price for the show’s writers — here’s how the production team had to handle the intense atmosphere of the medical drama.

Having wrapped its first season just around a month ago, HBO’s hit medical drama series The Pitt is now heading towards its second season greenlit soon after the first instalment’s premiere.

The series has already been labeled as one of the best TV shows of its kind, specifically thanks to its decision to stick to the idea of what the medical workers’ real-life routine in emergency rooms looks like.

The whole accuracy thing, however, wasn’t something easy to tackle for The Pitt’s production team that spent a decent amount of time on preparations even before the show’s writers could get to work.

‘The Pitt’ Writers Couldn’t Work Without the Emergency Floor Plan

‘The Pitt’ Writers Had an Unexpected Condition to Start Work on Season 1 - image 1As the show’s audiences might have noticed, the space that The Pitt’s doctors are limited to isn’t really that small to get lost in, though somehow the characters don’t seem to have any trouble navigating through the emergency room’s sections.

This, according to The Pitt’s showrunner John Wells, was handled well thanks to the series’ writers who would stick to the floor plan every time they would proceed with the script.

“Before anything was written, we had to know where we were going to go. It's so interwoven. [Production designer] Nina [Ruscio] designed a floor plan for us that we all then agreed upon, and then the writers worked seven months from around Christmas time of 2023, and then we're in production. I directed the pilot in July. You had to know exactly what was going to happen”, Wells revealed in an interview with IndieWire.

On top of that, Nina Ruscio also handled her job meticulously, visiting several hospitals to get the ideas of how The Pitt’s emergency room would be constructed.

“The actual architecture of the space was inversed like a black and white image, and we changed the physical dynamic of the space to be able to handle multiple victims at once — imagine it like the center of a wheel, and there would be patients in gurneys all around the doctors. I speak about it in a very detached way, but the level of horror of it all is very much like a war”, she previously stated in an interview with Variety.

‘The Pitt’ Season 2 Will Pick Up the Story After an Almost Year-Long Time Jump

The show’s next instalment is now set to premiere in January of 2026, a year after the first season and also with around the same time gap.

The new episodes will kick it off with Langdon's first day at work after he checked himself into a 30-day rehab, yet The Pitt’ second season won’t feature any flashbacks to the events that the audiences will miss out on during those 10 months.

“That’s not the show. We start at 7 am and end at 10 pm, and I think that’s what worked for us. It comes with its challenges, but that’s also what makes it fun, because you’re playing in this tight little box”, The Pitt’s showrunner R. Scott Gemmill revealed in an interview with TVLine.

When Is ‘The Pitt’ Season 2 Being Released?

The show’s season 2 will premiere sometime in January of 2026 on Max.
