Missing Costner much?

Summary:

  • The Postman is a 1997 movie featuring Kevin Costner.
  • The film depicts a post-apocalyptic world in 2013, showing the United States falling under a feudalist system.
  • The neo-western never got enough credit.

People always assume that life will change drastically in ten or twenty years, but the truth is, it's still a long way to go before all the taxis are replaced by flying machines and robots work alongside humans.

But this picture of a new world is not all that the human imagination created in the 90s. There's a movie called The Postman, produced and directed by Kevin Costner, which premiered in 1997. Of course, Costner also leads the cast, which probably makes you want to see the movie even more.

The Postman is an epic post-apocalyptic adventure film loosely based on David Brin's 1985 book of the same name. The movie is set in 2013, with America being fallen into disrepair and becoming a feudalist system run by local warlords.

Violence, outlaw, chaos and constant fear of everything is now what the nation has to live in. However, there’s one man, Kevin Costner’s character, known as “The Postman,” who changes it all and gives the people hope they needed so much.

He changes into the uniform of a postman he found and takes a sack of mail with him, and that makes him some kind of savior and the one who could bring peace to his townspeople.

The thing is, by pretending to be a mailman and delivering letters to another town, he also starts rumors that the government has been reinstated, and so he tricks the town into feeding him.

The fandom for this unlikely western sci-fi dystopian movie is huge, as many fans of complex storytelling simply adore intellectual scripts. However, the ratings of this movie are not that high – an anticlimactic 10% on Rotten Tomatoes’ tomatometer and 50% audience score make fans wonder.

“I believe this movie was completely misunderstood. This epic sci-fi starring Kevin Costner has breathtaking cinematography, shot on site in Colorado etc. More importantly, it has one of the deepest subjects ive ever seen in a movie. The power of ideas, beliefs and hope but also how they are shared,” one Redditor said.

The Postman featuring Kevin Costner is available to stream on Prime.
